Hi @ric38,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you’re having a frustrating issue with your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help troubleshoot and resolve the “Error Printing” issue.

Check Printer Status

  • Ensure the printer is turned on and connected to your network (if using network printing).
  • Check if there are any error messages or warning lights on the printer’s display.

Clear Print Queue

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click on your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw and select See what's printing.
  • In the print queue window, click on Printer in the menu and select Cancel All Documents.

Restart Printer and Computer

  • Turn off your printer and computer.
  • Wait for a minute, then turn them back on. This can help reset any temporary issues.

Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Go to HP’s official website and download the latest drivers for your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw.
  • Install the drivers and follow the on-screen instructions. You might need to uninstall the current drivers before installing the new ones.

Check Printer Spooler Service

  • Press Windows Key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Find Print Spooler in the list, right-click on it, and select Restart. This will restart the print spooler service.

Check for Paper Jams

  • Open the printer’s access panels and check for any paper jams or obstructions. Clear any paper jams you find.

Check Printer Settings

  • Ensure that your printer is set as the default printer. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, right-click on your printer, and select Set as default printer.

Perform a Printer Reset

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup or Settings.
  • Look for Printer Maintenance or Restore Factory Defaults, and perform the reset.

Check Network Connection (if applicable)

  • If you’re printing over a network, ensure your printer and computer are connected to the same network.
  • Print a network configuration page from your printer’s control panel to check the network status.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
