Welcome to the HP Community --
iOS is not restricted to the HP Smart application for printing.
HP offers the HP Smart app -- it's a clever app and also optional.
if you dislike HP Smart, see if the iPhone / Apple App Store has something else you like better.
AirPrint comes to mind
Use AirPrint to print from your iPhone or iPad

Sure, I've had printers I liked less than others. I am sorry for your sad situation.
You might not have to use HP Smart -- you do have to use an application or a built-in "something" that recognizes how to interact with the printer hardware so the printer can put your stuff on paper.
Perhaps someone else can tell you how to use your printer without HP Smart and without "an app" to print.
