I'm trying to use my printer to do a WiFi direct connection as I see that is an option for this printer, however I can't get it to work. It says I need to download WiFi direct software but all of the drivers and softeware I've tried installing for the Envy 4520 don't include any WiFi direct software. I can't use the regular wireless connection since I'm at a college and don't want my printer connected to the entire wireless network available to every student.

Every way I've seen to try and connect with WiFi direct doesn't work for me since I don't know how to get the software and when I try to connect in the wireless menu on my computer it says the network password is incorrect even though I am entering the correct password shown on the printer.

This doesnt' quite answer my question because I have the software downloaded and the wifi direct says its on on my printer, but I'm still not sure how I'm supposed to connect to it from my PC. I don't see any option to connect to it with any of the software that I've downloaded and when I try to connect to it in the network connections tab it says the password doesn't work.

I have not used this in your type of environment -- the following is my best guess based on the instructions:

Set up the Wireless Direct connection, including the Wireless Direct password to the "network" between your printer and your computer.

If you previously installed the software using the USB method, set up Wireless Direct and use the instructions in 4A-4D.

OR

Once you have Wireless Direct set up and connected, install your downloaded Full Feature Software.  The wireless password will be the Wireless Direct password.

To print from a wireless-capable computer (Windows)

  1. Make sure you have turned on Wi-Fi Direct on the printer.
  2. Turn on the computer's Wi-Fi connection. For more information, see the documentation provided with the computer.

NOTE: If your computer does not support Wi-Fi, you are not able to use Wi-Fi Direct.

  1. From the computer, connect to a new network. Use the process you normally use to connect to a new wireless network or hotspot. Choose the Wi-Fi Direct name from the list of wireless networks shown such as DIRECT-**- HP ENVY-4520 (where ** are the unique characters to identify your printer and XXXX is the printer model located on the printer).

Enter the Wi-Fi Direct password when prompted.

NOTE: To find the (Wireless Direct) password, touch (Wi-Fi Direct) on the Home screen (of the printer).

  1. Proceed to step 5 if the printer has been installed and connected to the computer over a wireless
    network.

If the printer has been installed and connected to your computer with a USB cable, follow the steps below to install the printer software using the HP Wi-Fi Direct connection.

4A.  Depending on your operating system, do one of the following:

  • Windows 8.1: Click the down arrow in lower left corner of the Start screen, select the printer
    name, and then click Utilities.
Windows 8: Right-click an empty area on the Start screen, click All Apps on the app bar,
select the printer name, and then click Utilities.
Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP: From the computer desktop, click Start, select
All Programs, click HP, click the folder of your printer.

4B. Click Printer Setup & Software, and then select Connect a new printer.

4C. When the Connection Options software screen appears, select Wireless.

Select your HP printer software from the list of detected printers.

4D. Follow the on-screen instructions.

5. Print your document.

The problem is that I can't get any form of wifi direct up on my PC. I don't know how to get it. Everything I've seen to get it to set up on my PC doesn't do anything and the wifi connection where I enter the password shown on the printer won't connect, although it does on my phone.

same problem here- installed all software, printer says the computer is connected, windows says the driver is unavailable. running win 10 on hp pavilion 2016. sometimes searching for printers say no device is listed when connected to wifi direct. other times it says driver is unavailable. its frustrating
