HP LaserJet pro 477
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have had an HP LaserJet pro 477 for some years now (I bought it new) and it has been a very reliable workhorse.

I thank HP for their clever design.

Now my circumstances have changed and while I've been using it w/ USB I now need to connect it to WiFi. I get the error:  invalid wpa passphrase My printer firmware is:  20170728   and it is almost certain that is the issue.

The CURRENT firmware is:  20211118

My question is:  Will I still be able to use generic / non HP supplies in my printer if I upgrade to the latest firmware?
Or ... do I need to try to find some intermediate level that will support WPA2/PSK and yet STILL allow use of generic supplies?

Thanks!
Jim

The answer is depends, if you have older cartridges then likely they will pancake with new firmware. Recently manufactured cartridges should not have an issue but there is really no way to know for sure as cartridge vendors change the chips they use quite often and what worked today may not work tomorrow. You may also want to ensure you have turned off automatic updates for firmware as once connected to a network the printer will start searching for new firmware updates and might install something automatically.

As for the passphrase, what issue are you having? If you have a newer router that supports 5Ghz networking it is possible that the you will need to create a separate wireless channel for the 2.4 Ghz band of your router and only let the printer connect to that channel

Thanks RT

I should have said I do have a separate/different SSID for my 2Ghz network but it is WPA2-PSK and I do not even have the option of trying WPA or WEP ... the router is too new...

I have tried it 5 or 6 times being very meticulous:

The error on the printer is:

Invalid WPA Passphrase

  Continue Anyway

  Restore Settings

I've also tried the WiFi protected setup several times and get same error msg.

It seems many others have resolved the issue with updated firmware on various HP printers,

and I realize 2017 vintage F/W is ancient.

I don't hold a big stash of cartridges on hand ...
but would like to avoid having to flash up then later downgrade at a future cart. replacement.

If no better solution presents itself I'll investigate more,
but would like to avoid the "supplies problem" / "dynamic security" errors some others reference:  https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/How-to-downgrade-firmware/td-p/7851199

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/rollback-driver-and-firmware/td-p/75349...

"This update disables dynamic security for printers manufactured before December 1, 2016. For printers manufactured on December 1, 2016, or later, dynamic security remains functional with this update."

I don't know if that is a global statement by HP or only for specific model numbers...

I may have to go figure out my date-of-mfg.  It does not appear to be on the configuration report...

or if it is ... maybe not in plain english  😉

Thanks again!
