My DJ 5650 is printing an alignment/calibration page ater each print job. I had just unpacked it from storage as my 5550 died. I put in my 5550 cartridges into the 5650,  Seem to work fine. They appear to have gutted the Printer Assistant. Not sure how to stop this. I read that I should align it but have no access to that function without the Utilities function in Printer Assistant.

The printer is also shutting off automatically after a while of inactivity. Is that normal and can it be adjusted?

Is there any way to ask HP for the newest drivers since they are not offered on the support (ha,ha,ha) page?

Thanks, Larry

@Larbo8075, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

The HP DeskJet 5650 printing an alignment or calibration page after each print job may indicate that the printer requires proper setup with the cartridges. Here are steps to address this issue:

Align Cartridges Manually:

  • Try accessing the printer settings through your computer's control panel. Look for "Printers and Devices" and select your HP DeskJet 5650. Check if there's an option to align the cartridges manually.
  • Alternatively, you can try aligning the cartridges through the printer's built-in menu if available. This step ensures that the cartridges are properly adjusted, which might resolve the printing of alignment pages.

Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure that the cartridges from the DeskJet 5550 are compatible with the 5650. Sometimes printer models require specific cartridges, and using different ones can lead to alignment issues.

Software and Drivers:

  • If Printer Assistant is no longer available, ensure that you have installed the latest drivers for the DeskJet 5650 from the HP website. These drivers may provide the necessary tools to manage printer settings.

Regarding the printer automatically shutting off after a period of inactivity:

  • Auto Power-off Feature:
    • Many modern printers have a power-saving feature that shuts the printer off after a certain period of inactivity to conserve energy. This is generally normal behavior.
    • You can adjust or disable this feature within the printer settings, which can often be accessed through the print driver software or directly via the printer’s control panel.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Garp,

I will attempt the suggestions. You may not know that HP has gutted their Legacy printer sections. No printer drivers available, the Printer Assistant is gutted, most of the printer specific troubleshooting links are dead. I am glad that when I first got the printer years ago, I downloaded the driver then. Yes, 5550 and 5650 use the same cartridges.

The will work on the printer this weekend. Thanks so much!!!

Hi Garp,

So, no utilities of any kind anywhere. No way to align anything. I ran the Printer and Scan Doctor and it did note a driver conflict but didn't say exactly what. When I installed the driver originally, it asked if I wanted to remove all previous drivers. I did so and installed this one. Not sure, then,  how there can be a conflict. I did print a test page from the Doctor app and the alignment lines look perfect. The test page has the alphabet on top 3x, then 4 color gradation squares, then the alignment lines.

Printers are not shown in Device Manager so I can't access driver info there. The About tab on Properties has a driver window that has about 10 driver files listed. Not sure what to do with that info.

Lastly,  when looking at Properties/Advanced, it doesn't look like the example on the website but when I go to the Ports tab, the USB 001 printer line says it is a Virtual printer port.

Thanks, Larry
