When starting a print job it sometimes starts doing an alignment instead. I want to know how to stop this very annoying and paperwasting and timewasting behaviour. No cartridge change or recent other unusual event.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.
I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:
Remove your print driver and software using the Uninstall a program tool in Windows Programs and Features.
If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
Search Windows for features, and then click Programs and Features or Apps & Features in the list of results.
In the list of installed programs, click your HP printer name, and then click Uninstall or Yes.
If a User Account Control message displays, click Yes.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software removal.
If the software uninstall process does not start or an error displays while uninstalling, download Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed (in English) from the Microsoft website, and then try uninstalling again.
To complete the uninstall, remove the printer and any Windows print drivers from the Windows Devices and Printers list.
Make sure the printer is turned on and in a ready state.
If your printer connects to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
Search Windows for devices, and then click Devices and Printers or Device Manager in the list of results.
Search the list for your printer or expand the Printers option.
Right-click the icon for your printer
, and then click Remove Device or Uninstall device.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the printer removal.
If multiple icons exist for your printer, remove them all.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

This is not really an answer to what I asked. I want to know how to disable the automatic starting alignments procedure, Even when it (occasionally) (vey occasionally) offers a popup window opportunity to cancel the alignment it flashes on and off screen too fast to respond. If one stops it by turning off the printer, it merrily sets to again immediately the machine is turned on again. Inexpressibly annoying, wastes paper and time.

it's not possible to disable this procedure until the printer completes the alignment process.
And, also once the printer completes the alignment process, the alignment page stop printing. (Its mandate procedure)

Thankyou for your efforts. However I cannot really accept it as solution, as actually I still do not have an answer to my question, which was how to disable the alignment procedure, ie. bring it under my control, and stop it starting by itself.

Let's try aligning ink cartridges and check.
a. Load letter or A4 unused plain white paper into the input tray.
b. Depending on your operating system, do one of the following to open the printer software:
● Windows 8: On the Start screen, right-click an empty area on the screen, click All Apps
on the app bar, and then click the icon with the printer's name.
● Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP: From the computer desktop, click Start,
select All Programs, click HP, click HP Deskjet 1510 series, and then click HP Deskjet
1510 series.
c. In the printer software, click Print & Scan and then click Maintain Your Printer to access the
printer toolbox.
The printer toolbox appears.
d. Click Align Ink Cartridges on the Device Services tab.
The printer prints an alignment sheet. this should stop the alignment procedure.
Keep me posted for further assistance.
