finally moved on to windows 10, but print quality provided by my officejet 6310 is not as good as my windows 7 laptop.
suspect black ink cartridge may be empty, but print and scan doctor 5.3.1 says ink levels are ok
tried the clean print head command, nothing seemed to happen and command appeared to complete immediately
tried the align print head command with the same result
the printer produces a test page that does not match the sample displayed on the screen. is this another symptom?
thank you

Welcome to HP Community
I have gone through your Post and would like to help
Since the Test Page is defective this might be an issue with the cartridges
Please follow all the instructions in this Link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-officejet-6300-all-in-one-printer-series/1120059/model/11200... and let me know how it goes
Thank you

thank you very much for your response....i will work through the document you provided later on.
so at least part of the problem was an empty black ink cartridge. it would have been very helpful if the print and scan doctor software had indicated that cartridge was empty. it instead indicated that the ink levels were ok.
also the align print heads and clean print heads commands do not work.
it seems that print and scan doctor does not support the officejet 6310??? or at least is currently not working very well with my 6310...
as part of my fun later on, i will uninstall and attempt to reinstall my printer...

Due to the age of the printer, the HP Print and Scan doctor may not support this printer and the support is limited. If the issue persists, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.
Keep me posted for any other assistance.
