I have an E3 code and cannot clear it. I don't have a paper jam. This is a n HP Smart Tank 6001 printer.

Hi @hitchie,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the E3 error on your HP Smart Tank 6001 printer typically indicates a paper jam or an issue with the paper path, even if there isn't an obvious visible jam. Since you've confirmed there is no paper jam, here are a few troubleshooting steps to try:

1. Turn off the printer and unplug it

  • Turn off your printer.
  • Unplug it from the power outlet for at least 30 seconds to fully reset the printer’s internal components.

2. Check the paper path again

  • Double-check the entire paper path, including areas around the paper input tray, output tray, and behind the paper roller mechanisms.
  • Use a flashlight to ensure there is no small piece of paper caught in any area, even in places that might be hard to see.

3. Check the Paper Feed Rollers

  • Sometimes paper feed rollers get dirty or stuck. Clean the rollers carefully with a lint-free cloth moistened with water. Be gentle to avoid damaging them.

4. Remove and Reinsert the Paper Tray

  • Sometimes the paper tray isn't fully inserted, causing a false jam detection. Remove the tray, check for any blockages, and then reinsert it securely.

5. Check the Ink Cartridges and Printhead

  • If the printhead is not seated correctly, it could cause an issue with the paper path. Remove and reseat the ink cartridges.
  • Make sure the printhead is not obstructed by any paper or debris.

6. Perform a Printer Reset

  • Perform a hard reset by turning off the printer, unplugging it, and waiting at least 30 seconds before plugging it back in and turning it on again.
  • After powering it on, check if the error message persists.

7. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can do this via the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP website and downloading the latest firmware.
