HP Photosmart 6510 - Following on screen instructions for carriage jam, I now get Improper Shutdown message on start up and later Carriage Jam message. Can see no obstructions but I am unable to clear either message and am unable to print.

The improper shutdown could have any number of causes (power flicker etc), unless we see it occurring again we may be able to ignore it for the time being. However, this article should address the carriage jam and get you back on track. Give the steps a shot and let me know the results:

I don't know whether it was connecting the printer directly into the wall socket, removing and reinserting the ink cartridges or what, but it has cleared the problem (Improper shutdown message and carriage jam). Many thanks.

This is an old thread, but I'm having the same issue with my Photosmart 6510.
The solution linked in your answer now redirects to the HP Support home page (http://support.hp.com/us-en).
Any chance you remember what it was?
Thanks!
