@Madilyn

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand there's an error message - "Non-HP cartridge installed" on your printer,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you ensure its a genuine HP Ink cartridge?

Have you attempted to reset the printer?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

Step 1: Use genuine HP ink cartridges

HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink or toner supplies. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve the issue. To check the authenticity of your cartridges, go to hp.com/go/anticounterfeit.

Visit HP SureSupply to check ink or toner cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies.

  1. Go to HP SureSupply.

  2. If necessary, select your country/region.

    Figure : Country/region selector

    Selecting your country/region
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to order new supplies or check cartridge compatibility with your printer.

You can also purchase genuine HP cartridges and supplies from other retailers.

If using genuine HP ink cartridges resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

Step 2: Acknowledge the message, and then continue with the print job

Click or press No, OK, or Continue to dismiss the message. The printer continues with the print job.

You might have to dismiss the message every time you print.

If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

Step 3: Reset the printer

If you still cannot print or if you are not able to dismiss the error message, reset the printer.

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

       NOTE:

HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)

Also, try the steps mentioned on this link: Click here

Note: HP Does not recommend refilling the cartridges as they may damage the printer.

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

The point of her question is that SHE DOESN'T WANT to use HP cartridges. They are absurdly expensive. I am the same, I can't believe I bought a printer that seems to have introduced updates that appear to monopolize its ink then overprice it!  Why don't you just clearly tell us how to disable the HP cartridge only setting, or tell us it can't be done- then we can decide ourselves if we want anything to do with HP?

HP will never learn..

HP has disrupted my business too many times for too many hours.

I am demanding a new printer or full reimbursement so I can purchase a printer from a company that adheres to Anti-Trust Laws!!!

The brilliant news is that I got a promotion from HP for posting my earlier reply. Thank you HP!!! Now how about answering the xxxxing question ?

I have brought this to the attention of an appropriate team within HP.

They will likely request information from you in order to look up.

Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact.

Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Community.

As I've mentioned privately- this is a simple question to answer in the interest of all who have bought HP printers in good faith, and who have stocked refills at better prices which once worked but now don't due to your updates. I won't deal with this privately unless you tell me here unequivocally in this forum that HP DOES NOT BLOCK NON HP REFILL CARTRIDGES AND THIS SHOULD WORK IN PRINCIPLE. After this, I'll be happy to deal with you privately. Otherwise I think we can all infer the answer from your resistance in dealing with it publicly,

Now we are going in circles. No thanks. Stop sending me private messages please HP. I'll just let the community know that you wouldn't answer the question publicly, and we can all infer your intent from that. Very, very poor. I've already purchased a non-HP printer and am deciding whether to bin the HP Envy or give it to someone else and let them suffer the same ink fate.
