When I scan a document via the automatic document feeder, the results generate a black vertical line about 1.25" from the left margin. (See visual below.) This problem does not occur when I scan the document directly on the glass.
I have cleaned the glass, rollers and separator as instructed, yet the line still appears. Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem?

Welcome to the HP Forums. I would be happy to help you with your HP Officejet 5610 printer. I understand that you are getting vertical lines when you scan from ADF, and you have already done some preliminary troubleshooting.
Don't worry though as I have a few steps to determine the issue and find a solution as well,
- Clean the scanner.
- Clean the automatic document feeder (ADF) rollers.
- Change the scan settings.
- Reset the printer.

Lift the ADF so you can see the scanner bed. At the extreme edge of the glass is a tiny slit of a window.
Line the paper up with this slit, and look where the line is being printed. See if there is a tiny speck of paper or dirt in the glass slit.
Anything stuck there will cause a line like what you are seeing. Blow it out with a can of compressed air, or a soft brush or cloth.

Thanks for your help. Your insights helped us to search for the glass slit that we weren't aware that existed until we found http://hp-officejet-5610.printerdoc.net/en/maintain-your-hp-all-in-one/clean-the-hp-all-in-one/clean....
Once we found and cleaned it, everything was fine.
Thanks again.
