I had to purchase a new printer to replace one that quit working (it was time.)  I purchased the exact model I had previously as I liked it.  The cartridges in the old printer were relatively new and so I would like to use them in my new printer.  I get an error message that they have been used.  Is there someway to use them?

At this point I would suggest you contact HP and ask for a solution (or a replacement of the cartridges).  From a post by Sunshyn2005, to contact HP Support see the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone number

Case number and phone number appear.

What exactly is the error message?  Is the message on the printer or the computer?

On the printer it says:

Used HP Cartridges

One or more of the cartridges installed are genuine HP cartridges that have been used previously.

(There is also a color dot with a letter in it signifying which cartridge it is.  ie, a yellow dot with a Y in it for the yellow cartridge.)

Thanks for any help you can give

The document here indicates that the printer should resume if you press "OK" on the printer.  You will need to use the setup cartridges for the initial installation, and I would suggest using these until they are depleted.

Previously used genuine HP cartridges installed
Used HP Cartridges
Baja low: Used HP Ink Cartridge(s) installed
The product has detected a used cartridge or cartridges.
Press or touch the OK button to clear the message.

I tried pressing ok but the message just pops back up again.  Very frustrating.
