Hello, @Geo73

I see that you were interacting with @DavidSMP. He is out of office and I'd like to help 🙂

The printer uses the photo black cartridge while printing on photo paper. But, you cannot operate the printer if the color cartridges are completely empty. You can print while the cartridges are low on ink, but the print head will be damaged while printing when the cartridges are depleted.

You can change the print settings to use only the black ink, but since your color cartridges are depleted, you need to replace the cartridges to get the printer working again.

Check http://hp.care/2ogCdNj for more details on this subject. While the document is for different printer series, it shares the same idea.

Hence, replace the ink cartridges which are empty and you can continue printing. Make sure to select the presets to black printing to make the most use of the black ink cartridge.

Hope that answers your question!

Good luck 🙂

Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums After reading your post I see that you require assistance with printing in black. It will be a delight to assist you here.

Superb analysis and brilliant diagnosis of the issue before posting. 🙂 Kudos to you on that score. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did this happen after a software or OS update?
  • Did you make copies directly from the printer and check?

For now please try these steps:

Reset the Mc printing system from this link: http://hp.care/2gOrf2g

Then add the printer to the network by following these steps:

1.) Click the Apple menu icon, and then click System Preferences.

2.) Click Printers and Scanners, Print and Scan, or Print and Fax.

3.) In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button to delete it.

4.) Click the Add button.

5.) Find, and then select the name of your printer from the Printer list, and then click Add to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.

6.) Click the Use or Print Using box, and then select the name of your printer.

7.) Avoid the AirPrint driver. Once the correct HP driver is chosen, select Add to add the printer to the list.

8.) Try to print.

This should fix the issue.

For further assistance check this link: http://hp.care/2y4E0cI for changing printer settings. Refer to the section under the option “Color and black & white settings”.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

I followed the instructionand printer printed in black only for a few pages. I then set the printer to print 12 pages . I could hear it  printing, it's in another room, but when I went to get the pages they were BLANK. The color & photo black cartridges were very low but the black ink is near full. Will the low color cartridges cause the printer to print blank pages or is there another problem? Thanks
