HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Hi,

An HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e has just been installed on our network, and a queue has been added on our Windows print server. When the jobs are passed to the server's print queue and sent to the printer, they are acknowledged by the printer, but not output. The job log states "unsupported file format".

This occurs regardless of file type (MS Office, PDF, Windows Test Page).

On the server, we have set the printer to use the following drivers:
HP Universal Printing PCL 6(v6.7.0)
HP Universal Printing PCL 6(v7.2.0)
HP Smart Unerversal Printing (v4.01.2)

The firmware on the printer has been updated to the latest (6.23.1.17-202408092238). No change.

The printer has been restarted. No change.

The printer will receive and process print jobs sent from a client computer with the full HP Software Suite installed.

What is the prescribed port and driver configuration for an HP OfficeJet Pro 9730e printer, so that jobs submitted through the Windows server queue are output by the device, rather than producing the "Failed - Wrong or unsupported file format" error.

Thanks!

The only driver that HP lists as supporting the printer under Windows Server 2016 is the Smart Universal Printer driver. Are you using the V3 driver or V4 driver version, although the website shows only the V4 as supported? If V4, keep in mind that you need to install the driver directly on workstations as V4 drivers will not copy from server to device and that is a possible reason for the issue. Likely this printer uses a PCL3 driver language and only the Smart UPD is going to provide that.

Thanks for the reply, Repairatrooper (cool name, btw).

I installed the HP SUP driver v4 on our print server, and pointed it to the printer (in this test environment, switched to OfficeJet Pro 9152e, which shows the same symptoms as the Officejet Pro 9730e.)

I also installed the same driver on my workstation.

Still, both the test page from the print server (via the printer's properties in Print Management), and a test from my workstation to the server's print queue failed.

The successful entry in the printer's job log was sent directly via IP address to the printer from my workstation, not via the 2016 server.

I've setup dozens of HP laserjet printers on our print servers, but have never had this type of problem until trying to share these HP inkjet printers from the server.

Thanks again.

John
