Trying to set up my gmail address to use for this purpose. ive attempted this directly through HP software wizard, as well as through the IP address for the printer. error is same as others in the forum..."ERROR: username or password is incorrect".  i am positive those items are correct, and im using google suggested smtp.gmail.com on port 465 ssl.

i CAN print from pc wirelessly, print from iphone and android, scan to networked shared folder.   Can't seem to figure this out. have tried multiple times and multiple sources. thanks in advance for any assistance. i have surface pro 3 win 8.1

Hi,
Gmail had recently changed several security options which may block the printer from connecting to their servers.

First open the following link and ensure you are logged on to the same account as you are setting for the printer.
https://myaccount.google.com/

Within the Signing in section ensure that "2-Step Verification" is set as "Off", as well ensure that "Access for less secure apps" is set as "Allowed", otherwise the verification will fail.

Within the Recent activity section click on "Devices", if you see any blocked connection attempt (it will be highlighted in red) click on Yes and follow the steps by allowing access for less secure apps...

Once you are done run a test for the outgoing user profile and check if the problem been resolved.

If you still experience difficulties, ensure that you use the correct logon details for Gmail as following:

SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com

Porrt: 465

SSL REquired: Checked

LOGON Required: Checked

User: your full gmail email address

And your gmail password

Thanks so much for the quick response ....and spot on too!  I actually figured this out last night and i can attest that the "allow less secure connections" was the issue (I checked my email later that night and saw mail from google relating the blocked attempt to my account.)

Again, many thanks!

Now, off to look up another print quality issue I'm having with photos only...

It did not work for me and I followed directions very carefully several times. I use a Mac.

Yes you can get your printer sending emails from your gmail account by turning off 2-step authentication, but unfortunately you are lowering the protection of your gmail account and making it easier to get hacked. This is NOT a good solution. There's a very good reason that Google encourages people to use 2-step authentication -- leave it ON!!

Here's the CORRECT solution to this problem:

1. Goto https://myaccount.google.com/security

2. Scroll down a little to the "Signing in to Google" section

3. Click on "App passwords"

Note: You may have used this previously to get Gmail working on your iPhone or in Outlook. You need to do the same thing for your printer.

4. At the bottom of the list select "Other (custom name)"

5. An empty textbox will appear.  Enter a descriptive name for your printer, such as "HP Officejet Pro @ Home"

6. Click the "Generate" button

7. Google will generate a password specifically for that device (i.e. your printer).  Nothing else can use it.

8. Go back to the HP Scan to E-mail Wizard.

9. Instead of entering your email password that you'd normally use to log into Gmail, this time enter the 16 character app password that was generated for your printer in the previous step.

10. Save and Test ... it will work now AND you can still keep your email account secure.

Hi Daniel_K,

I'm having this very same issue and I see that it's been a trend with this device. I too don't believe that compromising Google security is the answer and HP shouldn't be advocating that.

Anyway, when I'm at the Google signing into Google part I don't see where it says  "app passwords"

Your solution seems to make far more sense than anything HP has told me and I've had several of their employees tell me that I have to turn on the "less secure apps" feature. I the set up process I did have to disable 2-step authentication which I wasn't happy about but, at least, the scan to email feature worked. Further compromising security is not an option.

Is there a reason I'm not seeing the "app passwords" when I'm in the signing in to Google?
