Hi @daveydd
I believe you do not need to leave the pritner on permanently.
Basically, when you printer is turned on and connected to your home network, whenever it prints, the printer will count the pages towards the subscription plan.
If you do not need the Instant Ink service after the trial, do remember to cancel the service lest you get charged for the subscription!
Enjoy!

Hi,
Thanks for using the HP forum.
You will need to connect your printer wirelessly in order to use Instant Ink.
The following link shows how it works:

If you need help connecting your printer, the following resource would b helpful
Setting up the printer wirelessly using HP Auto Wireless Connect
Hope that helps.

Hi @daveydd
Most welcome. Hope you enjoy your Instant Ink service.
Remember, the printer will inform HP when to send more ink. Please sign up a plan that suits your printing needs:
"Your service is not based on how many cartridges you use, so print as many high quality photos as you like."
Enjoy!

Further thanks greenturtle - One other question if I may. She has a 3 months free trial of instant ink which I have applied for. Whilst the main house router remains on permanently she tends to turn her pc and printer off when not in use. Will she need to leave the printer switched on permanently with wifi continually connected?

I recently purchased a HP 3630 series printer for my son to use at university. I also saw the instant ink product and thought that was an ideal solution for him.
He has a wired connection to his room and access to multiple wifi networks provide for the students.
i connected his hp laptop to the wired connection - all ok.
i set up his printer - and got it working from his laptop in wifi direct mode.
The problem is that the instant ink service is complaining it cant see the printer from the internet.
i am tempted to install an Access Point on the wired connection and point the laptop and printer to the new wifi network, but I am concerned that the university might object on the grounds of security.
Is there an alternative method that i could use to circumvent this problem?

Hi @CaptainBuck,
Thanks for using the HP Forums.
Unfortunately, HP Instant Ink requires a valid Internet connection in order to validate and count the printed pages.
One workaround that we can think of is to use a mobile phone as a hotspot for your kid's use.
Please take note this method will incur additional Data charges if the mobile phone has a small limit for mobile data.
Hope that helps!
