If that were only the case, it wouldn't be so bad. In my case, it will "forget" about the scanner for no reason. Computer doesn't go offline, computer isn't rebooted, wireless never gets cut off. The printer is not even across the room.

Hi AcaCandy,
Uninstall the printer, and then reinstall it using the new version just released on 10-22-2012 below.

Installed it. But it very likely won't be fixed (I'm sorry HP but you are just not getting the benefit of the doubt any more)
The release notes say this release was merely to supply windows 8 compatibility and
improves Network Installation and Networking Functionality for Network connected products
- Cross-Subnet Re-Discovery: Allows the printer to be discovered across multiple subnets.
- If the IP address changes, the new address must be manually re-entered in a software tool provided with this package\
All are non issues in my setup so this release probably won't fix anything.
We'll see.

Thanks a lot, that helped to recreate the link that was secretly missing.
The change that lead to this might have been the installation f a second printer
(HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 A910 first, HP DesignJet 800PS 42 by HP HPGL2)
You may contact me in the office about this - I am an HP employee in Germany

Yep.
Connection has been up for at least 5 days straight (printer is in power save mode pc is not and is awake the entire time. These conditions used to break the connectionbetween the printer and the pc but they dont any longer' ! )
Last night the printer, when I tried 'scan to pc', complained a bit about not being connected to the pc (?) , allthough the pc reported the connection was fine. But the printer did manage to save the scan on the pc.
So seems fine !
The only issue I now still have is that the Hp printer driver for some reason is not compatible with Windows 2003. Weird.
Anyway, thanks HP! Have a working printer now.

@cooney wrote:No such file in my computer, in the bin folder or otherwise. In my x86 Program Files bin folder (but not in the bin folder for the 64-bit program files) I have an application file named "ScanToPCActivationApp" Opening that gets me this error message:
And no such file is on the installation CD that came with the printer.
On the CD there are dll files for 32-bit and 64-bit, both named "HPScanMiniDrv_LSK410.dll" Neither of those files seem to be on the computer.
Maybe there's something missing from the installation CD. I have tried uninstalling the printer files and reinstallling from the CD, to no avail.
Thanks for your help.

Hi lturagl,
Activate the scan connection to the computer

- Press the Power button (
) to turn the product on.
- Open the HP software by following one of these methods.
- Double-click the product icon (
) on your desktop.
- In Windows XP, click Start (
), or in Windows Vista and Windows 7, click the Windows icon (
), click All Programs , click the HP folder, click the folder with the name of your product series, and then click your product.
- Under Scanner Actions , click Activate Scan to Computer .HP designed a quick and easy tool that diagnoses and resolves many printing, scanning, and connectivity problems: The HP Print and Scan Doctor. HP recommends that you download and install the Print and Scan Doctor any time you need to troubleshoot a problem with your HP printer from the link below.
