Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

This worked. Don't know how you found this obscure setting but thanks.

I finally managed to get HP Smart running for my 3 macs and two printers, and so was able to move away from Easy Scan. There are no issues that I can find with HP Smart and Ventura, certainly not with the scanning process anyway, so no blank saves. However I did find one slightly annoying bug in that the crop function doesn't appear to work properly. HP Smart does put a box around the document when you select crop (as in easy scan) but trying to use the mouse to adjust the box size just does not seem to function. Sometimes I can crop horizontally but rarely vertically - it seems to be really hit and miss.  The only way I have found to get it to work every time is to enter the dimensions manually and keep adjusting until I get it to the right size. Anybody else have this issue? The only other point I would mention is that starting HP Smart is cumbersome to say the least. Unlike easy scan that you just open, with HP Smart you have to log in online with a user name and password, so it goes around the houses before you can actually do anything. But overall I think I prefer HP Smart to easy scan.

Thank you. Although I don't use the scan from computer option, saving as a pdf searchable from within the Easy Scan send button saves a visible (rather than blank) file. It seems a really good and easy option.

I find I'm getting a bit confused here. Some posts refer to the "scan from computer" option. My problem with Ventura arose when I was trying to "scan to computer".

The Hp 8730 was sending a blank pdf scan to the computer. Using this procedure corrected the problem:

Go into your HP Utility, open Scan to Computer, go to edit scan tasks, click on Save as PDF and then Edit... After you click on edit, change PDF to PDF-Searchable.  Once I made this change, the Scan To Computer started working again.

My best solution was very similar (using an HP ENVY 5660): Open HP Easy Scan (latest version from App Store) -- even tho you do this from HP Easy Scan you don't have to use it, will be able to need only the touchscreen from the printer -- go into Preferences in drop-down under Easy Scan, click on Scan to Computer, click on Scan to PDF, click on Edit, in Output Type choose PDF-Searchable, click on Save, close HP Easy Scan. After this I was able to use the touchscreen only to scan, just like before the update to Ventura, and was able to scan documents with multiple pages. I don't know if it makes a difference but I also have an Apple AirPrint-compatible printer and am using AirPrint.

It is confusing! Selecting pdf searchable in the HP Utility (as described) fixes scan to computer. But it seems that selecting save to pdf searchable in HP Easy Scan (from within the send to file options) also works when scanning form the computer. At least that was my experience.

Yes but this save using jpeg and then creating pdfs only lets you save one page at a time and I need to save scanned documents with many pages.

Odd, but this works and is not a big detour.  Much appreciated!

So when is the real fix going to happen?

Same problem here. Initiating the scan from the Mac via the scan software is an acceptable workaround. On the other hand it is much more convenient and quicker to start the process directly from your hp scanner. One would think that this gets fixed quickly but one month in the problem persists. If the problem is on HP's side (and not Apple), how does one get in touch with them?? It is a pity that Apple does not produce printers/scanners anymore -- maybe a difficult business, but would definitely strengthen the ecosystem. I have tried out many different printers and MFPs over the years and they all suck in one way or the other when hooked up to a Mac.

of course, hp must to solve the problems !
