I have HP Smart 154.2.1075.0, but I still have the same problem. I am using the 32 bit version, I don't know if that makes a difference.
Windows Scan works fine. The only reason I wanted to use HP Smart was that Windows Scan does not alow me to scan multiple pages into one document. As there are easy ways to merge seperate pdf pages into one document I am not going to waste any more time getting HP Smart to work.
Even when it HP Smart was working I could never select better than 300 dpi resolution.
I will never be buying an HP printer again.

My current version of HP Smart (156.1.1125.0) still will not allow scan to computer, either from the front panel of my Color Laserjet Pro MFP283cdw or from HP Smart on my computer. I get the very same error you do, Deftonio. Every suggestion to correct this has been taken, yet nothing works. HOWEVER: Microsoft Scan and Fax works just fine as does every other piece of software I own that has the capability to scan from an external source works just fine. It is ONLY the HP Smart app that will not work.
HP, you have a problem.
