HP ENVY 7640 printer stopped answering faxes automatically. Was answering faxes automatically. It has been some time since received a fax but unable to receive fax now.
-Able to send and receive faxes manually.
-Sleep Mode > 5 min.
-Redid Setup Wizard and set on auto answer and set on 2 rings to insure a button had not been hit/changed inadvertently.
-This phone line only used for faxes so ringer is turned off.
-No distinctive ringer
-no answering machine
-no phone connected to line
-Printer connected to computer wirelessly
-Printer is current on all updates
-researched forums and google for answer but was not able to fix
-clicked on HP support and did not find any topics to fix problem
-printer not under warranty

Hi @Terri-DE
Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.
Are you using a VOIP line for fax or a phone line?
Let us first run a fax test on the printer to isolate the issue
On the printer screen, go to Setup > Fax setup > Tools > Test
Check the printout for any issues related to fax.
Go to Fax menu > Preferences > Error correction mode > off
If you are not using a distinctive ring service, check to make sure that the Distinctive Ring feature on the printer is set to All Rings.
Go to Setup > Fax setup > Preferences > Distinctive ring > Yes > All rings
Now, try sending a fax to HP server which will send you a confirmation fax. By this, we can check if auto-answer is working.
Refer to this document to know how to send a fax to HP server.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Have a great day!
