Microsoft installed the July Patch Tuesday updated KB5015807 to my computer. Now my scanner will not scan. I get the message that it Couldn't connect to scanner. It says HP Smart cannot scan from this printer. Either no scanner was detected or HP Smart is not compatible with the scanner in this printer.
I have tried all the suggestions including the HP Scan Doctor but it still will not open the scanner.
Help........I cannot operate without my scanner.
Thanks,
Carol

Please download and install HP Scan Extended and use it to scan, you will get better control of scan jobs:
https://ftp.hp.com/pub/scanners/HPScanExt/HPScanExt.msi
HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads
Once it's downloaded and installed, for Windows 10:
(a) Hit Win key,
(b) Scroll down to HP group/folder,
(c) Double click "HP Scan Extended"
You can put a shortcut on Taskbar or Desktop

Thanks for your response. I am only a Level 1 user so please excuse my further questions.
1. Did the Microsoft update cause this problem? (the scanner was working perfectly until the update got installed)
2. Will HP Extended interfere with my printer or is the printer still controlled by the HP Smart app?
3. Should the HP Smart app be showing as a program in my Control Panel? (it does not show there now but when I go to
the Microsoft App store, it shows that HP Smart is installed on my system)
Thank you again for your help and patience with me,
Carol

I installed the HP Scan Extended software and my scanner still showed as "unavailable". I checked my Windows Services to be sure the WIA was Running and set to start up Automatically. I tried the HP Print & Scan Doctor, I tried repairing my HP Smart app through the Windows Repair tool. I checked to be sure my drivers were all up to date (which they were). Nothing worked.
I finally decided to uninstall the July Windows Tuesday Patch which was Security Update for Microsoft Windows (KB5015807) and that appears to have been the problem. My scanner is now working again!!!

I did try this, but my Printer was not compatible with the HP Scan Extended. I have HP Office Jet Pro 8023e. After uninstalling Cumulative Update KB5015807 I recovered my scan function. I found that HP Scan Extender does function with my 8023e after all. Thank you very much.

KayCee71, Go to notifications in the lower right task bar. Select All Settings, select Updates & Security, select View Updates History, select Uninstall updates at top of page. New window select Security Update Windows 10 21H2 x64 (KB5015807). Select uninstall. Now wait for it to finish and follow directions on screen. There you go.
