That was thefirst thing I did. Cleaned the registry and all old files, traces,etc. Re-installed and the HP Smart App just freezes the same as before. I have now uninstalled HP Smart completely and just using the HP Scan facility in the full feature software. This works beautifully still.

They were not able to help me. They claim that the issue is a problem w/ a recent Windows 10 update and wanted to transfer me to a paid help line to fix the issue. I'll just go back to using the HP Printer assistant.

WORKAROUND: Had the very same smart task error. After downloading new drivers which did nothing, I tried scanning again just for kicks. It came up with the same error. My choices were to cancel or try again, neither of which buttons functioned. Instead of closing the program, I tried the save button at the bottom and it worked! Lo and behold, I am able to save pdfs even while the error message is on the screen. See if this works for you. It's not right, but it works!
