HP Officejet Pro 8710
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I'm using the generic HP scanner software for the HP All-in-One and MFP printers with built-in scanners. Mine is actually an HP Officejet Pro 8710.  I'm trying to scan to my laptop, which does not have a big screen. The scan window is too big for the screen and there is no way to shrink it to fit on my screen, nor are there any scrollbars to scroll to the bottom.  I can pick up the window at the top and move it downwards, but it is too big to move up so I can see/reach/press the "Scan" button.  The only way to do a scan is if I change my screen resolution to a stupidly small size so the whole scan window becomes visible.

Does anyone else know of a more practical solution?

Not sure about generic software.

The Full Feature Software  (of which HP Scan is a part) is perhaps not compatible with a tiny screen (say, less than 13")  and (importantly) a lower resolution setting.  ?

Full Feature / Print and Scan Driver Software

You might have better luck using HP Smart for Windows.  This software does have some limitations on how the data is displayed on the screen though it might be a bit better than the HP Scan software (part of the Full Feature Software).

Thank you for your extensive reply, Dragon-Fur. Unfortunately, none of it helps.

A couple of comments:

1. I don't have a tiny screen (say, less than 13"). Mine is 14" diagonally (7" x 12" HxW)It is a reasonable sized laptop.

2. My screen resolution is 1366x768, its native resolution. There is another setting to improve text size (which windows does not name) which I have set at 125%.

3. I am already using HP's Full Feature / Print and Scan Driver Software. (I may have described badly earlier as "generic".).

4. It is not so that the "Full Feature Software  (of which HP Scan is a part) is not compatible " that is a problem. It is perfectly compatible, in that it works nicely.  The problem is that HP has designed grotty software (again) with no scrollbars on the scan & print windows so people can't navigate around them easily, (whether or not they have smaller screens.)

5. I have not investigated HP Smart for Windows, for two reasons. The HP website is so vague about what it is that it does not even say what hardware it is supposed to be used on. But in any case, I do not wish to download anything from Microsoft's "store" if I can avoid it. The company is corrupt, greedy, and does not give a rat's a*se about its users.  In any case why is it named an "App" and not "software"?

6. The alternative HP Scan and Capture  has 34% of users rating it with 1 star.  What I have is bad enough already. I don't want worse!

7. I don't have a "mobile device". I have a laptop,

But thanks anyway

OK.  I think I misunderstood your reason for posting.

There is no actual fix for viewing the software on a 12x7 inch screen and added magnification of 125%.

The offer of the HP Smart software was made in good faith - that you dislike the source of the download is just not something for which I have an opinion.

HP Scan and Capture would likely not work for you - it is likely not compatible with your screen size and magnification levels.

Many thanks, Dragon-Fur

Any irritation that was apparent in my comments was not directed at you, who have been most helpful.  I apologieif i gave any offense.

My irritation is directed at these huge corporations like HP and M$oft that push out such badly designed software, and rip off their customers.

I think we can both agree there is no solution to making the scan window of the HP software that comes with the printer work sensibly on a small laptop.

Best

You are welcome.

Understood.  Old age has few advantages - more tolerance for differing viewpoints can be one of the benefits.  Smiling.

What to do?

If you can ignore the source of the software enough to download the HP Smart for Windows Software, it might work for you.

In particular, HP Smart for Windows, when fully supported by your printer and OS, does provide pretty some nice options.

Hi,

Apologies for jumping in unannounced @Dragon-Fur.

The HP Scan application only supports 100% DPI and does not support scaling or resizing.

@broxx- Right-click your desktop icon and select Display settings.

Click on Advanced scaling settings and toggle on below setting:

Personally, for me, it did the trick when setting a higher scaling for the computer, however, it may rely on other display settings so may require to play around a bit to find the correct setting for you.

No worries.

Unfortunate wording - unnecessary and missed the point.

Well, I didn't even refer to you saying the software is not compatible (just used my standard testing for such issues) and just meant to highlight the fact that the HP Scan application only supports 100% DPI and does not support scaling or resizing

Actually, I would say this is quite the same as my statement indeed and that was not my intention at all.

I did meant to offer the configuration changes which may allow a better response of the software in such conditions, as possible.

Cheers,

Shlomi

Oh, dear.  We might actually be quibbling.  Smiling.

Regardless, I did completely forget about the "blurry" setting in Windows.  Very useful setting and certainly could have an impact.

I think I sounded more contradictory than was intended.   And here I just told Mr. @broxx  that Dragon is old and tolerant.  Perfect.  Smiling.

I believe we may have covered it, at least.  😁

Stay healthy and safe, my friend.

@broxx

So, "do something" and see it if helps your situation.

At the least, the software works even if it is not best suited to your nice little screen.

Dragon Out.
