Hey, this printer is stupid!!!!!!!! I would expect when a printer say it can print 2-sided AUTOMATICALLY, it does just that. E.g. the 4700 laser. I am not pleased with the product and the support. I am returning it. But i still love HP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently purchased the HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911a and for the life of me cannot figure out how to turn off two sided printing. On some documents when I hit print and the print option box comes up, I can uncheck the "Two-sided" printing option, but often times that option does not come up in the print box.
I have also checked the "Eco" option on the printer screen and it is off and suggests documents should print "single side to single side."
I then went to the web server option and checked the Copy Settings and that too is set to "one sided to one sided" printing.
How can I turn off two sided printing???

Hi djfides,
The first thing to understand about 2 sided printing is that it is controlled through software, so this will be an adjustment to software. To give instructions, I will need to know which OS you are using on your computer.

Thank you very much for the information and for saving me more hours of trying one thing or another, between each rest period. I perhaps should not be astonished but actually I am, because, on the 8600 display, under Copy<Settimgs>two sided>.. there are two more subpages seeming to offer two side functionality!...
And further, there is a cylindrical component detachable from the printer's back. This component is mentioned in the "Help" and represented to be the enabling mechanism for 2-sided printing (faxing?). This is pure "sadism" for trusting souls like me.
With the help of this data, is there perhaps a card to be installed somewhere which makes it a fully equipped two-sided printer?

As you mention the component at the rear of the printer is used in duplex printing (two-sided printing), which has nothing to do with the ability to scan, copy, or fax two sided documents. If you need to copy/scan/fax both sides of a page with the Officejet 8600 N911a you will need to do so manually as the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) on the top of the printer does not have the hardware capability to flip the page over automatically and scan the other side of a page.
The Officejet 8600 N911g and N911n have hardware that allows for you to scan/fax/copy two-sided documents. Which model do you have?

I'm not saying your wrong but...
I purchased this SPECIFIC PRINTER because HPs website shows it as printing both sides.

Hey jtye01,
There are 3 models to the HP Officejet Pro 8600:
- Base or N911a
- Plus or N911g
- Premium or N911n
All three have a duplexer in the rear for double sided printing from the PC. HOWEVER, only the N911g and N911n have an ADF or Automatic Document Feeder with a duplexing scanner unit. This allows for scanning and copying double sided documents/images without having to perform 2 scan cycles.
Have a wonderful day,
Jason
