I am not able to "copy" 2-sided documents on my hp envy 7640 all-in-one printer running on Windows 8. I select "copy", 2-sided, and 1/2. The manual notes that the printer will copy one side and then I should get a prompt to insert the second side. The printer copies the first side, then hesitates (as it should) but never prompts for the second side. It just prints the first side and leaves the second side blank.
How do I get the "copy" function to print 2-sided copies? I selected "Actual Size" in the copy settings because it says it cannot print 2-sided if "Print to Fit" is selected. It still will not print 2-sided.
Thank you for any suggestions to solve this problem.

Hi @xmajorette,
I see that you are experiencing issues copying two-sided. I would like to help you out today.
I would do a hard reset to see if that will resolve the issue.
Leave the printer on and unplug the power cable from the printer and wall outlet for 60 seconds.
Then reconnect the power cable to the printer and wall outlet rather than a surge protector.
This ensures the printer is receiving full power and may help this situation.
Here is a document to check the settings for copying:
Make sure you are loading two pieces of paper to copy on the ADF, to print two-sided, not just one sheet double sided.
If you appreciate my efforts, please click the 'Thumbs up' button below. Thank You.

What if we are trying to copy a double sided page (single page, double sided)? The printer can scan it to computer, but it isn't able to simply do the same thing and copy it?
The desired process:
1) Put a single page that is double sided in the ADF
2) Copy the first side of said page
3) Put the now discharged page back into the ADF, this time with the second side facing up
4) Copy the second side onto the same piece of paper that the printer printed the first side on.
This is the same process as scanning double sided documents via the ADF to a computer. I just find it hard that the printer can't do this process for copying.
EDIT: Upon further playing around, the 7640 will do this, but by using the glass scanner. Which is not a big deal as your going to have to flip the page manually anyways, whether you use the glass or the ADF.
Is the ADF only designed to work with MORE than one page?

Hello,
I also would be interested in copying 1 double sided document. Scan works but not the Copy function.
I can only copy one side of the document. If I want to copy both sides, I have to copy each side seperately.
Thanks
Stu

Hi,
You may consider HP Officejet Pro 8710,8720,8730. The duplexer ADF will automatically scan both sided for your document without additional manual flipping action.
One extra point to mention about OJP 8730 is that it contains 2 scan modules (top and bottom) to enable single pass double sided scanning feature. Instead of flipping to second page, it allow scanning both pages at 1 go (save time).
You may refer to the product info as follow.

Well, I just did this. (on the 640) take two different pages of paper to copy, load them on top of each other in the top feeder - text up-, set the copy function to 1/2 and start. The two pages will print opposite each other on one sheet of paper

First of all, it's a bit more complicated than the manual states. In the end I noticed that the 'Tray and Paper' selection was 'Main Tray Letter, Photo Paper.' I don't know why, as I've never printed a letter-size photo. All I had to do was tap to select 'Main Tray Letter, Plain Paper.'
Also, apparently you need to make a copy of the back side of the original. Then you put the front side and the copy of the back side face up in the ADF and you're good to go. The quality and the speed was quite satisfactory once I spent 45 minutes working it out.

It is virtually impossible to print two-sided documents easily or efficiently with this printer! It can be done, but only by manually copying one page, re-inserting the copy (face up) in the paper tray, and then copying the second page. This is the ONLY way to get a two-sided copy. If I try to use the options on the LCD menu, neither works--regardless of whether I use the automatic document feeder or if I place the page on the glass, I get the message "The selected paper or tray cannot be used for copying on both sides of a page. Job canceled."
This is a royal pain, and a major disadvantage/flaw of this printer. It offers duplex printing, but cannot deliver. The person doing the copying must do this manually, just as would be done with any low level printer that does NOT offer a duplex option. Pretty pathetic!
