Very clear description of the idea and the process. This registry change has the advantage that if there is any other poorly coded application that points only to outlook it will not fail, but instead point to your preferred email program.

Thanks...I did all that no trouble but still the scan to email from the Officejet Pro 8610 don't work...it just sends the email to an email address in the printer.
I do notice that the wlmail.exe in the registry is still there unchanged but there is also an outlook.exe which has the same Default and Path.
Can you see what I am doing wrong?
Thanks for your help. Gerry

Tried this solution for an HP Envy 110 and it worked, but have a client with an HP 4650 and it didn't work. Both Windows 10. Tried it with Thunderbird and Windows Mail. No go. Any other suggestions?
HP please fix this!

If you are somewhat compjter literate, you could open regedit and search for outlook and see if it shows up anywhere that is HP and then change it there along the same lines as shown above. Be sure to back up the registry so you can fix it if you brick the computer, though this area is unlikely to do that kind of thing. But better safe than sorry.

32 bit Windows has only a Program files folder,64 bit has 2 Program files folders, one is called Program files x86 or something similar.Right click on the Thunderbird shortcut and you'll find out where is your Thunderbird folder. Then read my earlier posts. You'll understand then.

This was so helpful for my brother's machine that migrated from windows 7 to 10. I only have 10 and there is no wnmail.exe. I cannot believe that HP has such problems with basic functionality and every post is how to set defaults or reinstall drivers. Really terrible.
