HP ENVY 5640 e-All-in-One Printer

I experience the following issues.  I think it may have been after an automatic firmware update:

  • Sometimes it will not even power on when I press the power button.
  • If it does power on, it usually gets stuck on the HP screen or shows a blue screen with one of several error codes, like: B84507AE, B80A0AEC, 00541654, B3A7AAFC, B8A7451E, and others.  It seems like the system cycles through a dozen different failure modes and error codes and is not consistently the same each time.
  • If it does make it to the home menu screen, it faults out there after a few seconds or the screen changes to black and white stripes or some kind of distortion.

There is no way to do a factory reset, as I cannot even get the printer to turn on and let me use the menu screen or connect via wifi.  Basically the printer seems like it is "bricked."

Yes, I have tried dozens of time to use a different cord or outlet, powering off and on.  I have even noticed that a desk lamp in the same room flickers briefly as I plug the printer cord in -- could this be a sign of a bad power supply, or is it normal?

Is there a complete reference guide that enables a product owner to decode all the error numbers?  I would like to have that for self-diagnosis and repair if possible.

Seems like a similar problem as:
