I was in this predicament when it came time for me to print my own wedding invitations. My invitation inserts were 4.75 inches by 7.75 inches, and none of the "standard" sizes I found worked -just- right. What ended up working for me, was this process. *Warning, this process does require the download of other software*
1st, create a page in Word (I used OpenOffice) to your specific dimensions, even if they are hinky.
2nd, make sure the margins are just right. I ended up having to shift my document to the left, but on the finished product, it was dead center.
3rd, export the finished document as a PDF. It was through the Adobe software that I was able to print regardless of paper size. There is a 30 day free trial of Adobe with all the bells and whistles, or it is available for purchase at a reasonable price. I used the trial for my invites.
4th, When in Adobe, under the Printing and Handling tab, I had selected the "size" button, and clicked on "actual size" as well as "choose paper source by PDF size." This option is why we exported a document exactly to our hinky size. I did not change the paper size in printer properties. It was still listed as "letter" and everything printed just fine.
5th, Print lots of test pages. In the end, I had to shift my margins, and in the viewer it looked strange, but on the test paper, it came out dead center. This is the only way I was able to even get the printer to recognize my "strange" paper size.
I hope this helps someone else!
*Edit* This printer did a fantastic job on my invitations as well as response cards, for which I used the same method as above. Crisp, dark ink. Wonderful.

Hi Folks,
I am happy to hear so many of you have found a way to get the custom paper sizes you needed to print. I just want to add that there is a firmware update for the HP Officejet Pro 8600. For those of you who have not already done the update please do.
Fix/Enhancement
1) Enhance ePrint Diagnostic report for ePrint Setup
2) Improve ease of wireless setup
3) Enhanced Embedded Web Services
4) Improve Print Quality
5) Improve Ink Usage
6) Improve paper path performance
7) Improve Digital scan performance
To check the version of your current printer firmware:
Printer Information Screen
1. From the Control panel, press Help (?) button, select Printer Information
2. Use the down arrow button to scroll to the 2nd screen
3. The current firmware revision will appear on the screen
If you do not have Version CLP1CN1322CR you need the update.

Happy printing ! 🙂

I am working on a MAC and have the current Firmware on my 8600Pro, and still cannot print custom sizes I am trying to print on 6.5x10 card stock, have set the paper size in Pages, and selected the name of the custom paper size by selecting my network printer name that is my default printer, going to Print and Scan Preferences, selecting the custom paper size that I named in the default paper size window at the bottom, and exited.
I put the card stock in the print tray and adjusted the paper tray sliders to center the stock in the paper tray, and when I try to print, continue to get the error that "Paper detected does not match paper size or type selected."
Very frustrating.. Any help would be appreciated....

Hi PRDSD,
I am sorry to hear that you are unable to print custom sizes. I understand you have the current Firmware. I would like to do my best to help you, however I would like some more information from you, to look into this further.
Which OS X are you working with? Click here to find which version you have.
Have you completed your Apple Updates recently? Click here to learn how to get the latest updates.
Are you able to print your custom sizes through TextEdit?
Please respond with that information and I will continue to help out!
Thanks

I am trying to copy a standard 4X6 photo. I have the right size and type (photo paper) in the machine. All I keep getting is it doesn't match the size or type paper required to copy the photo ??? Any help is appreciated.

The solution by user "Kicktires" in this thread:
worked for me on my Win7 system and allowed me to define custom paper sizes for my Officejet Pro 8600 Plus. Good luck!
