I have an HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 and I am trying to replace all four ink cartridges and keep getting a response "the indicated cartridges is older generation cartridge that does not work in your printer. It can still be used in older printer models." These are the same exact ink cartridges I have used 952XL, which is also exactly what the HP sticker states on the top of printer and ARE NOT refills. Do I need to do a factory reset? Is this a fireware bug? How do I get this fixed? I have important work that needs to be printed and cannot print, copy, scan anything!

I have the same issue with my OfficeJet 6978. Put in three BRAND NEW 902 color cartridges (C M and Y), the EXACT ONES listed as being required for the printer, and I get a message saying "The indicated cartridge is an older generation cartridge and does not work in your printer. It can still be used with some older printer models."
I put the old, "empty" 902XL cartridges back in, and after the printer went through its "maintenance" routine, it simply told me that "one or more of the cartridges has been used previously". The dates on the 902XL cartridges are actually OLDER than the ones on the BRAND NEW 902 cartridges, yet they work fine (except for being essentially empty), but the NEW ones are somehow "too old" to work in the printer.

Yes they are original, fresh out of HP package, no the warranty shows expired in 2020 but is new out of box. The screen states, The indicated cartridge is an older generation cartridge that does not work in your printer it can still be used in some older printer models.

Much as Autumnjaz mentioned, although the dates on them are from 2020, the cartridges were "brand new".
They were still in the original, sealed HP packaging, with the plastic "shrinkwrap", and orange break-away plastic covers on the bottoms of the cartridges.
The data from the cartridges is:
Cyan
non-working 902: T6L86A 2020/11/01
working 902XL: HP T6M02A 2020/09/18
Magenta
non-working 902: HP T6L90A 2020/10/14
working 902XL: HP T6M06A 2020/10/18
Yellow
non-working 902: HP T6L94A 2020/11/05
working 902XL: HP T6M10A 2020/07/25
Note that the error messge I quoted says nothing about the 902 cartridges being expired, but that they are "for an older generation printer". And as I also mentioned, when I put the empty 902XL cartridges back in the printer, it worked fine (aside from being out of color ink). There was a brief message about those cartridges having been used previously, but nothing about them being expired (or out of ink). And two of the three working 902XL cartridges have expiration dates that are BEFORE the dates on the non-working 902 cartridges.
