I have used HP products for over 30 years. It was my device of choice. I have had laptops, desktops, all in ones, accessories and or course printers. I would only use an HP printer because they worked.

When I bought my MFP M283 printer, I loved it. A nice work horse. I even recommended it to my clients, and they loved the printer.

When HP locked my printer, I read in the statement from HP that they wanted to ensure that the user had the best experience. I believe it is not HP's place to mandate that I use only their cartridges. If I had a problem with a 3rd party vendor, I would have taken the matter up with the 3rd party vendor. (By the way, I had no issues with the print). It was not stipulated when I bought my printer that I would have to use HP cartridges. It is not their place to activate this lock down with no notice. We were getting out a project and in the middle of it all, the printer locked.

I have disposed of my printer. I took it to recycling. I have since bought an Epson. I will not buy HP in the future.

Congratulations HP, this one move has cost HP what it should value the most, a loyal repeat customer.

ALSO, I will personally make sure all my clients and those around me be aware of this and avoid HP Products.

When I checked the website, there was information that this happened in the most recent update! HP cartridges for my printer cost $600+, so I started ordering generic ones from Amazon, still about $400! They worked fine for what I needed. But now I’m locked out!
But I refuse to give into this move from HP, this printer will go the dump, & I bought a much less expensive inkjet (not HP!) with extra cartridges for less than $200 (Canadian$).

Good for you...I concur this really pisses me off at HP for them to cause us all this pain!! I don't want to buy their toner as a fix I want to buy another product  brand if this is how they treat their customers.

Great Question!! We are left to hope that next time we buy toner cartridge it will work???....totally UNSAT!!!  Things had been working fine for a long time. I'll be looking for a new alternate printer brand laserjet if this does not get resolved. Too bad as Iiked this printer but do not like playing games with supplies.

I followed someone's advise when this message appeared a few weeks ago. I went to a web site reddit and followed the firmware downgrade, etc. it worked. Now its 3 weeks later and I get the same chip message.  shall I go to the reddit website again?

I dowgraded my firmware after it said 11/09/21 and marked the printer to not receive any upgrades. I still get the locked out window for non HP cartridges.

HP Recommended

Yes.  Reinstall the downgrade firmware, install it, and then immediately set your printer so it does not automatically install updates.  Mine is still working after the downgrade several weeks ago, but HP sends me notices that a new firmware is available.  IGNORE THEM.

the firmware you need has a 20200612 date, not November of 2021.  You cannot get it from HP.  A member of this community posted the link to the 2020 version it in early December, and the firmware filename contains 20200612

That's the version that is causing all the trouble.  The downgrade is not available at HP.  The version that works for me is dated 20200612 and came from reddit.

Hi, This is not completely true as I have the same issue and I've been using my non-HP cartridges for almost 1 year and suddenly (after an update from HP) they are no longer accepted.

I say this is DEFINITLY HP's issue to solve - and that should be solved YESTERDAY.

I hope they release an update to my Color LaserJet MFP M281fdw A.S.A.P.
