I guess my printer recently did a firmware upgrade because for the past 2 days I have gotten the error about non-hp chip for my cartridges. My cartridges are brand new, and they are HP branded. I have tried the "troubleshooting" recommended and it does not work.

Unless I am mistaken, you have to approve a firmware update. Some HP printer updates require connecting a USB cable. Many newer printers can update firmware over Wi-Fi but you still have to approved the update.
To check if an HP ink cartridge is genuine, look for a security label on the cartridge, scan the QR code on the label with your phone, and then go to HP's website hp.com/go/ok to verify the serial number on the label; if the label appears tampered or the serial number doesn't validate, the cartridge is likely not genuine.
