HP Officejet Pro 8730
macOS 10.15 Catalina

Dear community,

before I start, please excuse my bad English. I hope you understand what I am trying to get help on. I am totally frustrated by setting up scan to email with the HP Smart App and my printer HP Officejet Pro 8730. Everything works fine. I can print, copy and was able to set up the printer in HP Smart App. But when I want to set up scan to email in advanced settings in HP Smart App he asks me for a password. The username "admin" is already preset. I was squeezing google and this community pretty hard and all I found out was, that the password should be on the type label on the back of the printer. There are all sorts of information on that label but nothing close to a password. I tried every alphanumeric-combination printed on that label. I also semi-full reseted the printer twice with no success. Now the last two informations I found in the internet were (1) HP doesn't have a password just leave it blank -> that didn't work (2) Ask your printer administrator for the password -> there is no printer administrator, just me!

Please help. I use HP printers since the beginning I needed a printer and never had issues installing them or to get scan to email work...

Really need help!!!

Hi @Greenturtle,

that link did not help fully. But understanding that that password is the EWS Password helped a lot.

With that new information I came across several HP Community posts.

This one (https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printing-Errors-or-Lights-Stuck-Print-Jobs/Unable-to-reset-a-EWS-passw...) helped me at the end. It goes further than the solutions provided in your link. And I must say, that the Factory Rest was already Enabled, so I didn't need that. But the simple Restore Factory Defaults did the trick. I wonder way Semi-Full Rest didn't work, where is the difference?

If someone trips over my post. Here the solution from the above mentioned link that helped me:

From the home screen of your printer:

Press Back arrow 4 times (the one that lights up under the Home and ? buttons)

Support Menu

At the bottom of the screen will be a grey bar with an X, <, >, and ok button

Hit the < button once

It will take you to a Enable/Disable Menu option

Click OK

Use the ^ and v arrows to scroll through the list until you get to "reset to factory defaults"  (^ 5 times for me)

Click OK

You will see Factory Reset Disabled: Press OK to enable it"

Click OK

It will now say Factory Reset Enabled: Press OK to disable it"

Hit the X in the bottom left corner 3 or 4 times to return to the Support Menu

Hit the back arrow (the one that started this whole process)

You will be back at the main screen

Hit the gear icon in the upper left

Move down to Printer Maitenance

Click Restore

You will now have two options "Restore Settings" and "Restore factory Defaults"

Select Restore Factory Defaults

After the printer resets you should be able to go back to the web interface and those terrible blue locks are gone

You should set your own password now under Settings-->Security-->Password Settings

@Bitmic, Welcome to HP Support Community!

let us try these steps:

Option 1: Use the HP software to set up the Scan to Email feature.

1. Open the HP software/printer icon on the desktop screen.

2. Under the Scan or Scanner Actions heading, click Scan to Email Wizard.

3. When the outgoing email profile window displays, click your email address associated with this profile.

4. You will also find an option to delete a previously configured Email address

5. Enter an email profile display name. This is the name that will display on the printer control panel for the email profile.

6. Enter a security PIN to restrict access to this email profile from the printer control panel, if desired.

7. Enter the correct SMTP server and SMTP port information.

8. If you typically have to enter a user name and password to log into your email account, you will want to enter this information into the email authentication fields.

9. Click Next, and then click Save and Test or Save to complete the email profile configuration.

Option 2: Open the embedded web server

1. Find out the IP address or hostname of the printer by touching (Wireless) or (Ethernet) or by printing a network configuration page. Note: The printer must be on a network and must have an IP address.

2. In a supported web browser on your computer, type the IP address of the printer. For example, if the IP address is 123.123.123.123 Note: If you get a security message as "your connection is not private", click on Advanced and proceed to this website.

On the printer settings page, go to Scan > scan to email > Select your email address > Edit > Authenticate > Email login authentication > Input new password > Next > Save and Test

Let me know how this goes.

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Support Community.  Apologies for jumping in here.

Can you download and install the FULL featured printer software from HP for your operating system:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/swdetails/hp-officejet-pro-8730-all-in-one-printer-...

This resource will be a good reference:

Once you have downloaded and installed the FULL feature software, you will be able to print and scan.

This resource will show how to set up Scan to Email :

Hope that helps.

@TEJ1602 thank you very much for your message. Maybe my English is not that good and I just can't express my issue. But I know how to set up scan to email. I did several times in my life. I just don't have that password he is asking me for in the administration login to enter the setup. When I click an the icon scan the e-mail in the settings menu a pop-up appears in which the username is already filled with "admin" and I just need to enter a password. But which one? Even a semi-full reset of the system twice did not help. That system is still asking for that password. The password is not printed on the type label on the back and not where the ink is....

It is just so frustrating.

@Greenturtle thank you very much for your message. Since I use a Mac and not Microsoft I had to google for the FULL featured printer software from HP - found it - download it. Now I am using the HP Utility App. But having the same trouble. A Screenshot attached. Unfortunately in my language, but I hope you see what I am going for.

Advanced Settings has a padlock. If I try to enter these settings I am asked for a password I just don't have. It is not on a label on the printer, it can't be a password I set up and I semi-full reseted the printer twice... =(
