@kaiami

8740 printer has two trays... 8710 one tray.

I think you must not depend on me for this decision.

First and foremost, I have no way of determining whether the printer will work with your InDesign software.

Equally important, what I know about the printers in this model series is limited; I have not purchased the 8740 (though I am considering doing so).  I have not used this printer (or any of the 8700 printers).

Most important:  I am a voice in the ether; I do not represent HP Inc.

Were I you, I would look at the printer at the HP.com online store.  Call the staff at the store (number at the top of the web page):  Ask your questions... you need not purchase the printer to get information.  Smiling.

You can ask HP a most important question: If you buy the printer from HP and if that printer does not perform in the manner you require (for example, with your software), can you return the printer for money back?  If yes, what is return policy / time frame.  Get it in writing and read it.

NOTE:  Ensure you completely understand the return policy of any company with whom you plan to do business.

Finally, spend what you can afford - do not let someone talk you into blowing your entire business budget on a too-fancy printer, on cushy chair, or a glass-etched sign to hang on the door.  Smiling.

Good luck.

Thank you! I totally understand and agree with you! I will be sure to call HP tomorrow. I know Amazon has a 30 day return policy. But I will be sure to call HP to be sure the printer can do what I need it to. I really appreciate all the time you have spent helping me. I would love to get the 8740, but unfortunately I simply cannot afford to at this time. Hopefully I will find one that will suit my needs and it will last until I am able to get a better model. Again, your help has been priceless. I appreciate you more than I can say! Take care! 🙂

Extra information / how-to:

NOTES:
  • Look at the images on the datasheet -- understand which model you are buying.  The "top of the model" line printers are very different looking from the 8710 and there are technology differences as well.
  • Look out for words like "except"; these exclusions usually apply to the 8710 model
  • Look out for words "applies to"; these features may only apply to one or more of the top models
  • "Single pass" duplex scanning is available in the 8730 / 8740 models
  • Note the tiny screen size of the 8710, the slower speed, and other "not available" options
  • Magnify and READ the tiny, tiny print at the bottom each page - do this

When you call HP ask about the difference between "single pass duplex" and "mechanical two sided".  This is one of those details that helps you understand the differences in the technology used in one model as compared to another.

Ask about "Print foward design" -- what does this mean?

Instant Ink

Ask about differences in how / which ink is used, if any.    For example, can the 8710 accomodate an XL ink cartridge?

Read the tiny print in the Terms of Service document -- there is vital information contained in that document.

Thank you so much! I'm going to call HP. I'm a little disappointed. It looks like the ADP only works with PowerPoint and Word. I really appreciate your help! I'll call them as soon as I can!
