Hello kjbbear. I understand you are having cartridge issues with your Photosmart printer. I would like you to attempt the troubleshooting on this document: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01611456
Although a different issue is indicated in the title, the troubleshooting is the same. Please let me know if this assists you or not.

I have this same issue and have reset as you instruct but once completed, the same "Refer to Printer Documentation" error message has come up again. I allowed it to stay off for over 3 minutes. What else can I do?

You can buy another printer! I bought an EPSON Work Force 3520 and so far, I'm happy. I will be tanking the old HP out to the fileds for the "Office Space" treatment. if you dont know what I mean, go to YouTube and search OFFICE SPACE PRINTER.
Anyway, after all the aggrevation, I decided to say Goodbye to HP. Never will i be rooked by them again. Please delete my comments HP as you dont like when people speak out against you. I'll repost on my facebook regardless.
I'll also be unsubscribing to this forum--I no longer have to search for answers to hp problems!!!~

I've tried every fix suggested in the thread with negative results. I followed the link you posted, but it does me no good as the printer reverts to the 'Refer to printer documentation' message immediately.
If there is not a fix extant, then do your customers the courtesy of saying so and be done with it.
I switched from Epson to HP for a nearly identical series of customer support failures, and at this point it seems I'll need to be shopping for yet another. Very disapointed indeed.
