HP Laserjet 1010
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello,

after a re-install of Windows 7 (Home Premium), I cannot use my printer. Installing from the CD doesn't work, as apparently the generic IEEE 128.4 driver is missing. Installing that driver seems impossible too.

Manually installing through the windows "devices and printers" fails, as it doesn't even LIST the printer anymore either...

How do I get my printer to work again?

Edit: I have tried using the HP Support Assistant programme, but all this programme can see is the PC, not the printer (it won't detect it)..

The HPSA cannot see the printer because you do not have it successfully installed in the first place.  You will have to atleast get the basic hardware drivers and objects installed in the Device Manager for the printer in order for any kind of application to understand what its connected to.  With access to the driver files you can manually install each of the unknown or incomplete hardware objects of the Device Manager.

You could also try installing the printer over an alternative technique.  For example if you are USB right now then try an Ethernet cable connection through your home router.  An alternative connection would help you confirm if the printer is behaving correctly or not, it shoudl also open up access to the HPSA for more options.

Said basic drivers aren't anywhere to be found....

The 1010 isn't even LISTED in the list of drivers anymore.

Alright I went out and checked.  The model is listed, but there isnt a driver available for Win7.  That means you need to either use a driver from another printer that is supported on Win7 or let MS updates download and find a compatible driver for you.  Our goto legacy print driver is the Laserjet 4000.  You can play around and try different drivers from the list of preinstalled options that Win7 has to offer if this driver is not satisfactory.

Some printers are so old that they do not work with any other print drivers, they need model specific drivers developed for certain legacy OSs.  In that case sometimes you can find older versions of the driver and install them using compatibility mode on new OSs like Win7.  For example if your Win7 is 64bit then try the Vista 64bit driver but install it with compatibility mode.
