I recently purchased new cartridges for my 8135e printer. They worked fine for a month. Now one of the cartridges is causing a error message. "Cartridges rejected HP8130e either used or counterfeit". This is a genuine HPcartride purchased at Office Depot.
I have done the following:
- Restart the printer: YES
- Check cartridge compatibility: YEs
- Clean the cartridge contacts: YEs
- Check for protective tape: Yes
- Check for firmware updates: Yes
- Reset the printer: YEs
- Try different cartridges: I dont have a spare and dont want to have to buy another cartridge and have the same problem.
- Perform printer diagnostic: Yes - nothing reported
Please tell me why an HP printer will not accept an HPO cartridge? If you can fix this i will likely throw the printer out the window.
Thanks
Phred

To check if an HP ink cartridge is genuine, look for a security label on the cartridge, scan the QR code on the label with your phone, and then go to HP's website hp.com/go/ok to verify the serial number on the label; if the label appears tampered or the serial number doesn't validate, the cartridge is likely not genuine.
It is more likely the printhead needs to be cleaned
This link shows cleaning the 8600 printhead and removal is shown here.
This is another type of printhead cleaning, different from the above.
Cleaning and removing ink is shown below by our "Scullery" team.
An HP original video on how to clean the printheads by our experts. Yes, this can get messy, but it works. If your ink levels are good but you are printing blank pages then this is likely the solution.
Official HP advice on cleaning.
Some printers have a printhead cleaning procedure.
To clean the printhead on an HP printer, access the printer settings through the HP Smart app, navigate to "Print Quality Tools," and select "Clean Printhead"; this will initiate a cleaning cycle where the printer will automatically run a cleaning process to clear any clogs in the printhead |
Inkjet and printhead cleaning kits are available
Consumer inkjet printer printheads typically last for several years, with some lasting up to 10 years or even longer. However, the lifespan can vary greatly depending on usage, maintenance, and environmental factors.
