I was just told that HP recently released an update that will not allow you to use a refilled HP ink cartridge in my Officejet Pro 6968. It takes 902XL cartridges. Sounds like something they did in 2016 but had to walk back on. If this is true it's like Ford telling you you can only use genuine Ford parts on your Ford car or it won't work. Is there a solution?

The following Firmware Update is available (and may have been installed) for your printer:

HP Officejet 6950/6960/Pro 6960/Pro 6970 All-in-One Series

Release date:  Apr 16, 2019

File name:  OJP6960_1910A.exe (26.0 MB)

Description

This software tool will help you update your printer to the latest firmware. Please refer to Enhancement/Fixes for more detail about the firmware update.

Reminder: Dynamic security enabled printer. This Firmware includes dynamic security measures, which may prevent supplies with non-HP chips or circuitry from working now or in the future. More at: www.hp.com/go/learnaboutsupplies.

Note: For printers manufactured prior to December 1, 2016 dynamic security will not be enabled by this firmware. Please note that HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges.

I cannot reasonably comment on whether one should only use genuine parts in a printer - or an automobile.  I am one of the people in the world that always use HP ink in HP printers and Lincoln parts in Lincoln automobiles.  Personal opinion.

If the printer refuses to allow off-brand / remanufactured ink,

I can offer little in the way of solutions you will find satisfactory.

For example, possible solutions include:

1.  Use HP genuine ink in the printer.

2.  Replace the printer.

3.  Contact HP Technical Support - explain your personal situation and ask if HP would like to grant you an exception to the policy.

The last suggestion (#3) is not meant to be snarky - those of us who are Experts in the community speak for ourselves.  We do not speak for HP Technical Support - nor do we have any direct influence HP Policy or HP Warranty Services.  We, too, are HP customers.

Dragon-Fur - Thanks for your quick response. No snark in your reply. I'm going to reach out to their Tech Support this week and see what they come up with. Got nothing to loose. I do believe in supporting the manufacturer when possible. I personally alternate my Genuine HP ink cartridges with a refill from COSTCO for my HP All-in-one. I've frankly never seen the difference in print quality and the cost is half. I do, however, always use genuine EPSON Ultra Chrome inks in my Epson Stylus Pro 3880 photo printer where I rely on accuracy and consistancy. Thanks again.

You are welcome.

Personally, I spend more money on printers (and other tech) than might the average home consumer.   The ability to do so is not a boast, simply a privilege for which I worked long and hard to achieve.

Because non-HP cartridges (remanufactured / off-brand) can eventually break the ink system (even assuming the printer allows the abuse in the first place), I always use genuine products in my devices.  "Fussy-am-I"

I understand the desire to save money - the only difference is choosing where to compromise.  Smiling.

Good Luck.
