I changed the ink cartridge in my HP Envy 4500. It printed the alignment page fine. I put on the screen to scan and it just keeps saying it's scanning 'forever' until I cancel. Then it's stuck on cancel until I force a shut down. I'm ready to take a sledgehammer to this printer.

Hi @Paulaayn,
Thanks for reaching out to the HP Forums! I would be happy to save you from sledge-hammering your Envy 4500.
I understand your printer is stuck in a scanning mode, and from your description, it sounds like it was the alignment page that failed to scan. Do you have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet or is it in a surge protector or power bar? Even if you have been using a surge protector/power bar all this time and you feel it is not the cause, please connect it to a wall outlet just so we can eliminate the power source as the root cause. Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector
In this document you will see, ISSUE: Problems or issues may arise when an HP LaserJet series printer is connected to an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), a power strip, or a surge protector
^ This is not limited to Laserjet printers.
I ask because I wonder if the printer is not getting enough power to perform the task. If you do have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet already, let's perform a hard reset. To do so, leave the printer on and unplug the power cable for 1 minute. While it is unplugged, hold down the power button on the printer for 10-15 seconds to release any built up power, then after the minute has passed, plug the printer back in.
Please let me know the outcome of your efforts, and I will get back to you. Thanks.

Thanks Sunshyn2005!! The hard reset work.
Yes, I have it plugged straight into the wall. That was part of the solution the last time the alignment page wouldn't scan. This seems to be happening EVERY time I change the ink???

Hi @Paulaayn, Happy Firday!
I am glad the hard reset worked. I am not sure why this would be happening every time you replace your cartridges, but if it happens again, I suggest calling us. In fact, if you would like to create a case now to report the issue you are welcome to do so. What you can do, is use the following link to create yourself a case number, then when you call there will be a record of the issue.
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on HP contact options - click on Get phone number
Case number and phone number appear.
Best of luck! Have a wonderful weekend.

I tried doing the hard reset as instructed, but, it did not work. I installed a new cartridge and yet again I am getting the same error message to replace the cartridge. This is the second new cartridge, and still not working. Frustrating!

I found a solution to the printer problem. My error was telling me to replace my black ink cartridge, which I did, but, still it was asking for me to replace it. Frustrating. I ended up taking out the color cartridge and restarting my printer, and now the problem seems to be resolved, although, I do not dare to put the color cartridge in the printer now. Maybe in a few days I will try, after I get the work done that I a doing.
