envy 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My envy 5540 will not print color from programs on my 64-bit Windows 10 laptop. It will print color from Chrome, and it will print color from my iPhone and my iPad. I have ascertained that grayscale is not checked anywhere, and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the printer according to hp directions.

Try these steps to restart the print spooler and try again -

1) Turn off the printer using the power button.
2) Search Windows for run, and click the Run Windows application in the list of results.
3) Type services.msc in the Run window, and then press Enter on the keyboard.
The Services menu opens.
4) Right-click Print Spooler and select Stop.

5) After the service has been stopped, close the service window and use Windows Explorer to browse to C:\Windows\System32\Spool\PRINTERS.
6) Delete all files inside the PRINTERS folder.
7) Restart your computer.
8) Turn on your printer.

Step 2 Re-install the printer drivers -

1) In the search box, type and open "Uninstall a Program".
2) Look for HP Printer software.
3) Right-click to uninstall.
4) In the search box, type and open “Devices and printers”.
5) In the Devices and Printers, look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose “Delete” or “Remove Device”.
6) Open the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”).
8) Click on the "Drivers" tab.
9) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click “Remove” at the bottom.
10) Select Ok.
11) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows.

I followed directions to deinstall, but when I got to step 10, it said the 5540 printer is in use by the 5540 printer, even though it is turned off and unplugged! Now what?

I also noticed while trying to test print from a photo that the Color specification changes from Color to Monochrome and won't change back.

Same here.

I have a HP Envy 5540 that suddenly won't print in color (greyscale only) from a Windows 10 PC as well. Meanwhile it prints in color from my Android Phone just fine. The option to select color or greyscale is missing in the settings on my PC.

Problems started when i uninstalled this printer from my PC, because i needed to install a second printer in my network (Envy Photo 6220). After installing the 6220 i re-installed the 5540 again using the latest HP drivers. The next day i noticed the 5540 was printing greyscale only (no color at all).

I followed all instructions i found on this forum (dating back to 2017 when these problems first occured). Uninstalling everything, cleaning temp folders and cleaning registry etcetera. It worked until i rebooted the PC, it was greyscale printing again and no double sided printing. I was able to get the double sided printing feature to be recognised again, but the option to select color was just not there.

I wiped and cleared everything again and used the old CD that came with the printer and installed the old driver. It's printing color and double-sided without needing to change anything. I hope it stays that way after rebooting.

I'll keep you updated.

One other thing, if you let Windows install this printer using drivers that Microsoft downloads for you, you won't be able to print in color either.

Oops! Didn't last! I left the room for a couple of hours, returned, printed the same page with photo paper, properties glossy and quality Best, and it printed monochrome. Changed to Plain paper, quality Normal, printed monochrome.

Then I checked the Photos app on the pc, and it changed the color spec, saying "Color was changed because of a conflict with another printer setting." What printer setting??? What is that all about? This is so frustrating!
