I posted something to X - not sure if it helps to pile on to my thread? https://x.com/Hoboken411/status/1899094026399223871

Once I get unsuspended tomorrow on X, I'll RT your post and bring some attention to it. I also have a decent following on there, but I'm really hoping someone picks it up and puts pressure on HP.

You might also want to tag HPSupport on that post.

Most likely the firmware update thinks the genuine HP cartridge is a knock off and blocking the printer from working.  I placed my old cartridge that came with the printer and the printer is functional with no error.  I find it strange that I can’t register my printer with the serial number and product code shown in the HP Smart app.  Maybe HP does not support a refurbished model purchased from Amazon, which I thought was a authorized HP distributor.  Regardless, since my printer appears to be functional, I purchased a knock-off cartridge from Amazon.  It gets good reviews.  Hopefully, HP’s firmware does not already block it from working.  I’m bummed about the HP cartridge.  The print darkness was superior.

I'm using the original toner that came with the printer.

Maybe someone can tag for me. I don't use twitter, it's an old account (with 14k followers) from over a decade ago. I happen to despise social media despite any positive benefits that might exist.

Wow, what a s*** show. So official HP cartridges are brick. Ironic.

Indeed it is.  I have a $90 toner cartridge installed that has printed less than 50 of the 2400 pages it is rated for.  I am considering purchasing a 134A toner cartridge to see if it works so I can get by until a fix is (hopefully) issued.

So after a lot of backwards and forwards on a WhatsApp message system they’re conceded that the printer is faulty and will require changing. Fortunately it is in warranty and they’re sending one out (will take around a week)

Well that's good, maybe your issues was not related to firmware?

My model is out of warranty by a few months. They want me to pay $100 for tech support. More than I paid for the printer.

If the firmware bricking is their fault and has permanently destroyed the printer - they should send out new units to everyone - similar to a car recall.

Who wants to keep being associated with a company like this? I'd rather just have my money back and go my separate way. A clean breakup.
