HP OfficeJet Pro
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have TWO of the same printers!  HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 printers and they are identical. They use the same cartridge numbers. I have a few new unopened print cartridges and I inserted a BRAND NEW BLACK HP ink cartridge into Printer #2 and it gave me NO ERROR MESSAGE. I then inserted 3 new coloured cartridges from Printer #1 that were used to only print a few pages on printer #1 and once I added those coloured ones into printer #2 that threw the code "Older Generation Ink Cartridge"  for ALL 4 cartridges (when the black one was already fine with no code.....black was fresh out of the box)....error code said that ALL of them were "older generation cartridges" when the three coloured ones had just worked in printer #1 and the Black one was fine before inserting the three coloured ones. They are all original HP Cartridges and they are NOT cheap to replace. I then tried the black one in printer #1 and it threw an error code there also but then it reset itself and was ok so I put that black one back into printer #2 again thinking it was a glitch as it was brand new out of the box and there is the error code on that black one and again the 3 coloured ones. VERY FRUSTRATED! I unplugged and reset as the instructions from other's posts with same problems and I wiped the chip contacts on the cartridges but the chips in the cartridges worked perfectly fine in printer #1 so what is wrong? These are so expensive to replace and I don't have receipt anymore to exchange under warranty. I have 2 of the same printers so I'm never left stuck. Thanks.

I found this online after alot of research. Apparently others who had to deal with this had to downgrade their operating system on the printer to get rid of one of the latest automatic updates which was quite sometime ago so any cartridges you have where the warranty on the cartridge is stamped to have expired date (even if the cartridge is original or nor even opened yet because you stocked up on extra cartridges) you are screwed and they won't work. This is also a very old printer I'm using so if I stock up on extra cartridges I am penalized because they expire?? Nothing should expire except bread! Very very frustrating. See this link to downgrade your software:

https://support.ldproducts.com/en_us/how-to-downgrade-hp-952xl-printer-firmware-HJEImt18P

and where I saw it explained in another HP forum page is here: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Ink-Cartridges-Print-Quality/Older-generation-cartridge-error/...

Good luck, I will be giving my cartridge serial numbers to HP to replace my brand new cartridges that are now unusable. Not impressed at all. We are supposed to be reducing our carbon footprint and we are filling up landfills with plastic cartridges.

If this is a genuine HP ink cartridge, I would need some information related to the ink cartridges and the printer which cannot be shared on a public post for security reasons. I have sent you a private message, reply to the message with the required details.

Hello There,

I have the same issue today and I don't use HP Cartridges because they are really expensive and I didn't sign an agreement when I purchase the printer to do that . I will need the fastest solution to keep using my printer.

Thanks,

The printer works fine after I downgraded the firmware version.

Thanks,

Thank you so much for posting this!!!! After hours of useless research, downgrading the firmware of my Officejet 8710 printer did the trick. I was close to giving up on a very expensive set of 953XL HP original cartridges that happened to be manufactured before the firmware upgrade. What a lousy "feature"...

Great stuff! Glad to have helped others to fix the same problem that caused me days of working with a printer repair company and my IT guy to try and figure out the problem.

So Glad I could help RedheadYYM....yes very frustrating! You're welcome and if you end up with cartridges you cannot use get ahold of HP in this post as they offered to replace/rectify.

I bought brand new ink cartridges that are HP with expiration date of 2023 and I keep getting this error message that they are older generation! I have an hp inkjet all in one model Pro that takes 902 cartridges. Why don’t they work?????
