If I print from MacBook Pro running Catalina there is no problem but printing the same job from the Chromebook fails with filter failed message.

@Badoldbadger, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you are not able to print from a Chromebook. Have you tried printing different types of documents and check if that prints?

Filter failed errors are found on Macs, not on Chromebooks. Kindly recheck the error.

Update the printer firmware

Hi Kumar0307,

Thanks for your reply.

The filter failed message was most definitely on an Acer Chromebook - my son's and is why I have posted this issue. We got around it by him logging on to the same Google drive using my MacBook Pro and printing the pdf file from there. The printer is shared wirelessly on our router at home. It seems HP printers struggle with chrome books from what I can see on searching the web.

He prints many files without issue but this is a frequent problem.

The printer software is up to date according to the printer.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

kind regards.

@Badoldbadger

If the issue persists with the Chromebook, I think this issue needs some additional technical assistance that can be better provided through one-on-one interaction or a remote session with our HP Support team.

Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region for further assistance.

You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.

@KUMAR0307, are 100% sure about your response "Filter failed errors are found on Macs, not on Chromebooks. Kindly recheck the error."?

This is a screenshot from one of our Chromebooks with the issue:

For the OP:

If you run across this issue in the future, try checking off the "Print as Image" box. It worked for us, but we are unsure how and why. We're assuming it has something to do with memory in either/and printer and chromebook.

Thanks for the info, I’ll give it a try when the issue arises again and post an update.

Great tip, checking the print as image box allowed me to print the pdf.

I just started having the same issue with my Chromebook-to-HP Deskjet 2542. It was printing great up to yesterday, when everything I try to print results in "filter failure." I've tried PDFs, PDFs printed as an images, 1-page simple Word files with no images or special formatting, simple short emails...everything. I've tried removing and reinstalling the printer. restarting my Chromebook, poring over many online support rooms. Nothing works. Please help! And THANK YOU.
