HP has recently released a firmware update for the 8600 series printer. The firmware has several product fixes/enhancements. Below is the list:
1) Enhance ePrint Diagnostic report for ePrint Setup
2) Improve ease of wireless setup
3) Enhanced Embedded Web Services
4) Improve Print Quality
5) Improve Ink Usage
6) Improve paper path performance
7) Improve Digital scan performance
The firmware version is CLP1CN1304AR and was released 2013-03-21.
As mentioned in 6), the paper path performance has been improved and this was directed at printing with Cardstock/Photo Paper in the 8600.
There are 3 different versions of the 8600 and I will provide links below to the download page for this firmware update for each.
8600 Premium (N911n or CN577a)
For information about how to perform a firmware update in the 8600 click the link below:

Let me know the results of updating the firmware and differences with the product's capacity to handle Cardstock/Photo Paper.

Hey dkardell,
Do you have the full software for the 8600 installed on the Mac PC? If so please look through the document linked below.
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01662562
The document walks one through printing on 4x6 photo paper, but the options for cardstock will be listed in the Paper/Quality panel described in the document. Let me know if this is able to get you to the options you are looking for.
I am not an HP employee.

There is no such dialog. Try printing a simple PDF to card stock. (and yes I've installed the software on my Mac). Go to finder. Select a PDF. Open it. Select Print... You get a dialog that does have Page Setup... and Printer.. however neither of those gives you an app name (obvisouly since its printing with Adobe's PDF viewer).

Hi...I see recommendations for how to print on cardstock under Mac OSx (10.8). I cannot find the settings discussed in this thread. I just installed my 8600+ and cannot print cardstock, either (getting an "out of paper" message) and I am hopeful that there is some form of a "heavy paper" setting but cannot find where that would be.
Thanks.

Hi dkardell,
You have to make sure that the full feature software is installed for your MAC so you can see card stock as a paper type option. In the middle of the print dialog box, you will see the name of the application where you are printing from (for example, Preview). It is in a form of a dropdown and you have to click on that and select Paper Type/Quality on the options. You will see the paper type defaulted to plain paper. So you will have to click on the Plain Paper, select Card Stock among the choices.

I had same problem. An HP employee said to print 50-100 blank pages and that would make the feed pickup work for card stock and I assume photo paper. It works!

@L__Y wrote:ok had the exact same prob as everyone else on this forum- just talked to an awesome lady at tech support "Melissa" at HP services and she solved the issue and low and behold it was super simple...to solve this issue with this model make sure that your printing perferences under the actual printer and the program you are using are set to "cardstock" - meaning...
click on start menu open your printer preferences by right clicking icon and selecting printer preferences -under paper/quality tab be sure to change your paper type to "cardstock" under media- also if you are printing with microsoft office/word/ serif or which ever program you are using make sure the media or paper type is also selected to the cardstock as well. Should work then- ours did:) 🙂 🙂 Good Luck to all!
Thank you for sharing your expirience.
I was going to return the printer to the store after not able to print on the cardstock.
But after following your suggestion - I was able to print on cardstock!
The key is - to set Cardstock as a default paper type for in system's Printer Properties, and not for the Printing Session in the Print ... menu of your program (Word etc...)
