I have a Envy 5530 that has been working fine for years. It suddenly stopped working after I replaced a ink cartridge. Now when I start up the printer, it asks me to print alignment page, I picked OK and it is stuck on the "Printing alignment page" menu, forever. How can I skip this step or factory reset the printer?
Being desperate, I googled and found youtube videos showing me how to go into the service menu, but the trick the printer to be first in the Home menu, a luxury I don't have!

Hi MKazi,
After playing with this more than an hour, I figured out how to break out of the alignment jail:
1. Boot up printer
2. Proceed to align cartridge
3. When stuck at "Now printing alignment page..." tap the red X (bottom right) button
4. It will now be stuck at a "Cancelling..." screen
5. Print something, either by attaching a USB A-B cable (rare to find nowadays, I know) or via network (if it still works)
6. While the paper is being fed into the printer, hold it tight
7. Printer now reports paper jam, and shows a screen on how to resolve it
8. Proceed with the screen but don't open up the printer
9. Bingo! Now printer thinks you resolved the jam and proceed to Home menu.

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Forums.
I understand that you have an HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One Printer and after replacing the ink, the printer suggests to align. But is stuck on the "printing alignment page". I'll be glad to assist you.
I would like to know the following information to assist you better:
- Are you using original HP ink cartridges or refilled ink?
- Did the printer initially go through the alignment process after you replaced the ink cartridge?
While you respond to that. I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:
- Disconnect the power cable from the printer while the printer is still ON.
- Disconnect any other cables if connected the printer.
- Press and hold the printer’s power button for 15 seconds.
- The printer should be directly connected to the wall outlet and not to a surge protector.
- Reconnect the power cable to print and the printer should power ON by itself. If the printer doesn’t power ON then please manually power it ON.
Let us attempt to align the printer manually by following the below steps:
- From the Home screen on the printer display, select Tools.
NOTE: If you do not see the Home screen, touch the Home button. - From the Tools menu on the printer display, select Align Printer. Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Print a diagnostics page if the cartridges are not low on ink.
If the issue still persists then I suggest you to clean the cartridges manually by following the steps from "Step 12: Clean the area around the ink nozzles" from this HP document: https://hp.care/2GHfvGz
Once the cartridges are cleaned, you may try to align them again.
If the printer is still stuck on the "printing alignment page" message then you may check my private message. The private message contains steps to reset the printer to its original factory condition.
I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Keep me posted for further assistance.
All the best! 🙂

Thank you for your super quick reply.
If performed hard reset first and then attempted to perform a semi full reset, and the home screen does not appear then it indicates towards a hardware issue with the printer.
In such a case you may contact our HP phone support team to check the available service options for your printer:
1) Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/
2) Click on "Continue as guest".
3) Enter the serial of your device. You can refer to this Link: hp.care/2bygf7l for help in locating your Serial Number.
4) Select the country from the drop-down.
5) Click on "Show Options".
6) Fill the web-form. A case number and phone number will now populate for you.
Hope this works out. Let me know.
Good luck!

So, now I have access to the secret menu (which must not be named) and found out that the "scan motor" test fails (hangs indefinitely again). This is probably the hardware failure that is causing print alignment to not proceed. Time to buy a new printer :'(

It is a hardware failure as correctly diagnosed by you. You may either check with our phone support for printer upgrade options or directly go for a new printer as per your convenience.
You have been fabulous to work with considering your superb technical skills and valuable patience. Kudos to you for that.
Take care!
