8710
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So - I have gotten tired on spending 120$ per 2-3 months for printer cartridges -- so I want to print EVERYTHING in black and white/grayscale -- I have changed the Preferences setting on my PC ... BUT every time I try to print in &W -- the printer prompts me to push OK if I only want to print in B&W --

This is BS -- I know you want me to buy your overpriced cartridges -- but I have had it -- I WANT to know how to get the printer to stop prompting me and just printing my documents in B&W like the Preferences state --

The 8710 printer is unquestionably the worst printer I have ever owned -- between Wireless requiring me to reset the printer every 2 months to overpriced cartridges -- I will not ever buy another HP printer.

@architectscott Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you would like to print only in the grayscale.

Do not worry. I will try to fix the issue.

Please perform the below steps and check for the issue.

  1. On your computer, search Windows for Devices and Printers.

  2. Right-click your printer, and then select Printing Preferences from the drop-down list.

  3. Select your printer again, and then click the Paper/Quality or Features tab, depending on your software.

    • To print using only the black ink cartridge, change one of the following settings depending on what displays.

      • Click Advanced, click Print in Grayscale, and then select Black Ink Only.

      • Click the Black & White button.

        NOTE:

To use even less black ink at a lower quality, select the Draft quality setting when available.

    • To print high quality black & white documents or photos, change one of the following settings depending on what displays.

      • Click Advanced, click Print in Grayscale, and then select Print in Grayscale or High Quality Grayscale.

      • Click Print in Grayscale, and then select High Quality Grayscale.

        NOTE:

The printer uses a mix of black and color inks to produce a high quality black printout.

I have done this already -- it appears that the 8710 printer firmware overrides this ... it determines that WHENEVER a cartridge is empty that it prompts for EACH job regardless of the printer settings on the PC ... frustrating and really bad engineering (though it is intentional) -- obviously done to increase the buying of HP Printer Cartridges ...  HP is a shadow of the wonderful company it was in the 80s/90s - unfortunate -- no more HP Printers for me ...

I understand your concerns.

Please perform the clean reinstallation of Pre-installed HP drivers

1.       In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.       Select your HP Printer

3.       Select Uninstall

4.       In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.       In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6.       Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7.       Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.       Click on the “Drivers” tab

9.       Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.   Select Ok

11.   Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.   Close Devices and Printers, restart the computer.

Click here to download the HP Full-featured driver.

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Have a nice day!!

these directions are incorrect -- I will just buy another printer when the virus thing is over -- frankly tired of inferior crap from HP (I have been fighting with this crappy printer ever since I got it -- worst printer I have ever owned)

HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.  For inkjet printers:

  • Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Officejet 8040a is an example.
  • Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet Pro 8710.  The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged.
  • Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printhead or burned out printhead firing resistors. The Officejet 6700 is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.

The document here describes how ink is used.  While the document is written for HP Inkjet printers the same principles apply to inkjet printers from other manufacturers.

If you never want to print in color you might consider a B&W Laser printer.

Thanks Bob -- and that is what I plan to do -- buy a Brother B/W printer -- the 8710 is a piece of garbage -- I have never had more problems with a printer -- please give me an address where I can send this back to HP (or I am right down he road from Fort Collins -- I guess I could just leave it in the front ...)

Team -- I do want to thank all of you for your suggestions -- and sorry for my rant on the printer.  Same time -- it is the worst printer I have ever had ... firmware is awful, I have to reinstall it with PC and Mac 2-4 times each month (not sure why), the Smart software is an oxymoron (it is crap) ....

So I am buying a Brother B&W Laser and hoping for a better experience -- there was a B&W HP also -- but I will NEVER buy another HP product .... once again - thank you -- and sorry that many of you work for a company that designs printers to sell print their cartridges -- HP actually told me one day that buying off market refill brands will ruin my printer ... too bad a company has to lie to sell their products .... no more HP for me ... keep your resume up to speed as someone is going to buy this company when the market recovers (and I will be laughing ....)
