Hi @sunshyn2005,

Why do you ask?

Just to add my thanks as someone else who had the same problem, now solved.

Can print but not scan. I notice HP hasn't listed an official driver for OS X 10.10 Yosemite in their downloads section.

Sure, Apple have changed their OS. but HP should have used the developer builds to release updated drivers on time. This is a HP problem.

Please write the new drivers.

I though maybe I could help you find the necessary drivers. HP may not have full feature software but the driver should be available here;  HP Printer Drivers for OS X, depending on your printer model of course. Some of the significantly older printers may not be compatible, thus I asked your printer model.

I see you can print but not scan, this tells me you must have a driver, the issue is with the scan software. What happens when you try to scan and what program are you using to scan from?

I've wasted tons of time debugging this piece of crap. It turns out that if you disable the 'public' READ/WRITE SNMP community (or your netowrk blocks random SNMP) the printer can't scan/fax; and the stupid HP Utility can't even talk to it. So in order for the printer to function from (at least) Mac OS X systems, you need make sure that it allows SNMP GET/SET via the "public" community. You can find this setting in the web interface under the "Networking" tab, then select "SNMP" from the left column. Make sure to check "Enable SNMP read-write access" and un-check "Disable SNMP default Get and Set Community Name of 'public'."

First, I had to resort to 'tcpdump' to discover this. None of the HP online support was worth a **bleep**.

Second, THIS IS TERRIBLY INSECURE. DEPENDING ON THE 'PUBLIC' SNMP COMMUNITY FOR BASIC FUNCTIONALITY IS INSANE. THIS IS A SECURITY NIGHTMARE.

HP, I will be contacting every security-related list/blog I can find and making the most noise possible about this. Shipping product with glaring security flaws like this is just unacceptable.

Yes, that happened to me today, I can't scan anymore, used to. The only way I found how is to go to your apple logo, top left corner/systems preferences/printers scanners, then the box pops up and then choose scan. This was the only way I could scan and email my document today. I am still lookig in the HP website but I can't find anything.....

nice work but not in my case. My SNMP was already set to enable

Sunshyn2005 -

Yes that did it.  Very technically correct.  I just moved to the Apple platform and imagine my surprise that in order to get an HP printer to function on an Apple, I had to load the full list of HP printer drivers, etc. to make one printer work.  That, in my humble opinion, is not the best solution for the money.  Simply, the Yosemite drivers were not complete, and yes maybe some permissions were not correct.

Many thanks to make this 'experience' more enjoyable!

Sunnshyn2005, I did everything as shown and listed. I still cannot scan wireless from my HP to the Mac. My error is that the HP indicates that the Mac is not showing up., however it is listed on the screen. The Mac indicates that there is a problem with the scanner.

I can print, fax etc but no scan!

btw, the only download at the HP site is for the 8600 is "HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.37-2.dmg" I have yet to find ANY Yosemite 10.10.1 driver downloads.

Hi @dejones1

HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.37.dmg is compatible with both 10.9 and 10.10. I know you said you have completed all of the steps already to troubleshoot the issue, but let's try another approach. Please complete the steps below;

I apologize in advanced this is not a fun task! I will try to make it easy to follow. Some of the files described in the following steps may not be found, if you can't find one of the files or folders on your computer, don't be alarmed.

Move the files and/or folders to the trash, drag and drop

  • Macintosh HD/Applications//Hewlett-Packard folder
  • Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/ - delete all files and folders regarding HP/Hewlett Packard
  • In Macintosh HD/Library/Caches - delete all files and folders regarding HP/Hewlett Packard
  • Macintosh HD/Library/Documentation/Help/ - delete all files and folders regarding HP/Hewlett Packard
  • Macintosh HD/Library/Frameworks/HPServicesInterface.framework
  • Macintosh HD/Library/Frameworks/HPSmartX.framework
  • Macintosh HD/Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/HP Scan Pro
  • In Macintosh HD/Library/Image Capture/Scripts - delete all files and folders regarding HP/Hewlett Packard
  • In Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences - delete all files and folders regarding HP/Hewlett Packard

Move Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist to the desktop. NOTE: Not removing the file loginwindow.plist during the manual uninstall could cause the uninstall to be unsuccessful.

  • In Macintosh HD/Library/Printer/hp - delete folder
  • In Macintosh HD/Library/StartupItems, drag the following folders to the trash, HP IO and HP Trap Monitor
  • In Macintosh HD/Users/USERNAME (this should have a symbol of a house next to it)/Library/Preferences, drag the following folders to the trash: *Any files beginning with com.apple.print, *Any files beginning with com.hp, *Any files beginning with Hewlett-Packard, *Any files beginning with HP or hp
  • In MacintoshHD/Users/USERNAME/Library/Printers, drag any All-in-One printers listed here into the trash.
  • Drag the HP icons from the Dock and drop it on an empty space on the desktop. The icon will disappear.

Close all open windows.
Restart.
Empty the Trash.
After logging in, Repair Disk Permissions

  1. On the Dock, click  Applications, and then click Utilities.
  2. Double-click Disk Utility.
  3. Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
  4. Click the Repair Disk Permissions button at the bottom of the window.
  5. Once the repair is complete, restart the computer .
  6. Restart the computer.

Download and install the software (unless you still have the previous file you downloaded, then you can install it from that download): HP-Inkjet-SW-OSX-Mavericks_v12.34.37.dmg, once the software is successfully installed we can then delete the loginwindow.plist from the desktop.

Check for Apple updates and now you should have the scan to computer option.

Let me know if this does the trick, I am eager to see this resolved.

Sunshyn2005;

Did all you listed. when trying to use tools in Mac to scan, I get an error. Message is: The scanner is in use by application 'Officejet Pro 8600'.

When I try to scan from the printer to the Mac I get a message from the printer: one or more of the following problems caused the scan to fail;" the program on the computer is in use. The OCR application is not installed." I am going to try direct wire to see if that works.
