This worked for me and my Canon printer scanner (obviously w/o the HP drivers). Thanks for the advice

Hi Sunshyn2005

Tried all of your steps, except when I get to the link 'Download and install the HP Printer Drivers for OS X' nothing happens. It just opens a browser window that is blank with the following URL http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907. No download occurs.

I tried to continue anyhow, and when I open HP Scan, I get as far as selecting 'Scan' and hitting 'Continue' and then get the spinning wheel of death, causing me to have to Force Quit the program.

I am also getting the message 'The scanner failed to complete the scan' when trying to scan using the Document Feeder in the scan utility through System Preferences, and the same message if the document is placed on the flatbed scanner.

Very very frustrating.

Please help

Hi @Skittles

I am sorry this has been such a frustrating experience. The only other thing I can suggest is may reinstalling the OS X, but HP does not have any supporting documentation for me to offer.

I did speak with a customer recently who had a different issue, but the solution to his/her problem was to reinstall his OS and he/she was kind enough to post the steps (This was for Mavericks, but I imagine this would be the same);

Use the built-in recovery disk to reinstall OS X while keeping your files and user settings intact.

Important: You must be connected to the Internet to reinstall OS X.
  1. Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
  2. If you’re not connected to the Internet, choose a network from the Wi-Fi menu (in the top-right corner of the screen).
  3. Select Reinstall OS X, then click Continue.
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions. In the pane where you select a disk, select your current OS X disk (in most cases, it’s the only one available).

Please let me know if you try this, and if it works. If you are uncomfortable with this suggestion, it might be best to try Apple support. Fingers crossed.

This worked perfect, follow the sequence and all will be good.

I have spent an hour on the phone to HP support who could not rectify this issue.

I also spent an hour on the phone to Apple and 5 hours reinstalling Yosemite OS X on my Mac Book. Still not working.

To add insult to injury, I followed the suggestion on another thread on HP Support (from a Support person) and now I can't get the printer to scan OR print.

Seems to be an issue with wireless communication. If I connect the MacBook with the USB cable, both printing and scanning work.

Any more ideas?

Thanks for this great post. It helped me 90%, but I had to add a little tweek, since the printer was not shown after I installed the drivers and clicked "Add printer", only "HP Deskjet 3050A", which does not allow for scanning. What I did was simply to change "HP Deskjet 3055A J611 series" into "HP Deskjet 3055A", and it worked! I can now print and scan as I did before updating to Yosemite.

This worked perfectly for me.  I have an Office Jet 8500 and I now connect wirelessly.  HP Utility will not work unless you are connected via ethernet.  I tried the previous suggestions in the thread and things actually got worse (the scanner was no longer identified at all, as opposed to appearing in system preferences but having no functionality).  But this fix, followed exactly, brought me back to full function.  Thanks so much!

FWIW, I also have VueScan scanning software, which I bought after a previous Mac OX upgrade killed my scanner function.  It was working fine.  For any of you doubting that this is completely an OSX issue and might be an HP issue, there's any proof you would need.

For anyone wondering why I wouldn't just use VueScan, I found it a little bit cumbersome and I got used to image scan.  Also, it is handy to have your scanner in System Preferences.

+1

Can print but not scan. I notice HP hasn't listed an offical driver for OS X 10.10 Yosemite in their downloads section.

Sure, Apple have changed their OS. but HP should have used the developer builds to release updated drivers on time. This is a HP problem.

Please write the new drivers.

I have tried all these steps, downloaded various drivers. i had no problems on old laptop with Mac OS 9. Now I have new macbook pro, with 10.10.1 yosemite, wireless HP officeject pro 8600 plus, and my system doesn't even recognize any available printers so i can't "ADD" anything.

i've repaired permissions, restarted, etc. please help!!

Hi @daihop

What printer model do you have?  How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?

@RFrazee

The issue you are having sound to be more related to the wireless than it does software. Is you printer setup on a wireless network, or is it connect via USB? If it is setup wirelessly, please connect a USB to test the connection.
