OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-one
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

OfficeJet Pro All-in-one printer will not accept refilled ink cartridges. Costco refills have been "rechipped" twice. Followed all troubleshooting tips including on/off, printer reset (unplug for 60 seconds), software and firmware reloads. Error message simply says " remove and reinstall indicated cartridges."

@JoeCote,

Welcome to HP Community,

Refilled cartridges can leak and clog the printer head, while this may not break the printer outright, it increases the risk of damage to your printer. If a refilled cartridge does break your printer, it also voids the warranty.

HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink or toner supplies. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges.

Refilled cartridges can leak and clog the printer head, while this may not break the printer outright, it increases the risk of damage to your printer. If a refilled cartridge does break your printer, it also voids the warranty.

In this scenario, you could try to update the printer firmware and check if that helps.

If your printer connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to install the latest firmware update on your printer from our HP support website. Alternatively you can also try to update the printer firmware directly from the printer control panel.

For more details on how to update, please use this link: HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to do a hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.

With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

Remove USB cable, if present.

Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.

Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.

Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

You may follow the steps suggested in this support document to clean the ink cartridge contacts - HP Printers - 'Incompatible Ink Cartridge' or 'Ink Cartridges Missing' Error Displays

Thank you Jeet Singh for your advice. Unfortunately I have done all of that. I need to know if firmware version WMP1CN1910AR truly turns off "Dynamic Security." The 8720 was recently automatically updated to this version and I suspect is actually the cause for this problem, as I have been able to use refilled cartridges before. As for other software the printer is completely up to date and I have done hard resets, etc. Nothing works! Costco has rechipped the refilled cartridges twice and they maintain their integrity.

@JoeCote,

Thanks for the details,

After reviewing your post, I did go through the software and driver download and found that this is the latest firmware update which was released on Apr 16, 2019 and here's the description:

This software tool will help you update your printer to the latest firmware. Please refer to Enhancement/Fixes for more detail about the firmware update.

Reminder: Dynamic security enabled printer. This Firmware includes dynamic security measures, which may prevent supplies with non-HP chips or circuitry from working now or in the future. More at: www.hp.com/go/learnaboutsupplies.

Note: For printers manufactured prior to December 1, 2016 dynamic security will not be enabled by this firmware. Please note that HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges.

Thank you once again for your attention to my problem. I guess at this point I would have to say it is not fixed. I've done everything suggested and I still CANNOT use the refilled cartridges.

I have the same issue with my 8720 officejetpro printer. After updating to 1910AR firmsware automatically it does not work with thrid party cartridges. Thank you for all of your suggestions but still no official solution is released from HP. And just to remind you quickly that use of third party cartridges does not void warranty under Magnuson Moss Warranty Improvement Act.

I Also have the same issues with any cartrdige that has never been in the printer. If the cartridge has been in the printer before it works, but will say depleted. any new aftermarket or refilled cartridge with reset chip, the printer says cartridge problem. This is only happening on my printer with the 1910AR firmware update. My other 8720 with 1834A firmware is still taking the cartridges. So the cartridges work on my other printer, just not the one with 1910AR firmware.

I have called into support and all they can do is redirect me to the lawsuit page with firware issues but that lawsuit was already completed and won by the customers.

Is there any way I can get the firmware 1834A reinstalled on my printer??
