HP Color LaserJet Pro M283fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello HP community,

After many years with an inkjet printer, I have now opted for a laser printer from HP and bought the "HP Color LaserJet Pro M283fdw" last week.
The printer makes a very good impression and also has a nice print image. Even photos and pictures look very nice when it works.
The printer is connected to my FritzBox via a network cable. In the FritzBox I have reserved the IP address for the printer so that it does not change. I left the basic settings for the network in the printer menu.
The setup on my Windows 10 PC also worked perfectly. I have two more Windows 10 laptops and two Android smartphones. On all Windows devices I have set up the printer completely using the "HPEasyStart_11_5_4644_17.exe" utility. I installed the "HP Smart" apps on the two smartphones (Android 10).
Then the problems started:
When I try to print something on a Windows 10 laptop, I often get the message "The printer is offline". However, I can print on another laptop or from a smartphone. The "HP Print and Scan Doctor" did not bring any help here either, just the information that the driver should be reinstalled. Most of the time, does the printer work again some time later ?! A quick remedy is to turn the printer off and then on again.
The same applies to the scanner. If I want to scan something, there is often a message on the PC "No access to the scanner". The same applies here: the "HP Print and Scan Doctor" program cannot help here and usually advises you to reinstall it.
In both cases, "HP Print and Scan Doctor" finds the printer on the network!
This is extremely annoying, with a not exactly cheap and brand new device. I also had problems with my inkjet printers, but here the printer only cost 1/3! I was hoping to have fewer problems with a higher quality device.
Ask for help and tips on why this could be.

Change port settings from WSD to TCP/IP and try to see will it help.

YT tutorial for win 7 but the steps are the same.

This problem is very common and seems to be caused by Windows Print Management not refreshing printer status after an error or supplies issue is resolved.

Hi,

I would also suggest trying to follow the below version of the HP Print and Scan Doctor Utility by selecting your printer, which automatically creates a TCP/IP port:

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe

Be sure to restart your PC and allow the utility to complete the process, then check for any difference.

Try printing and check for any change, if the same remains try printing using the newly added print queue copy and check.

For the scan problem, also try below steps:
From the search bar type CMD, right-click on Command-Line and select Run as Administrator, be sure to confirm any prompt by pressing Yes.

Past the following command and press enter:

Sc config stisvc depend= rpcss/ShellHWDetection

Now restart your computer and try scanning, may you see any difference?

Hello Valsimot and Repairatrooper,
thank you for your tip! I have now switched the printer from "WSD" to "TCP / IP" on all Windows 10 computers. To date, this only works. However, with the "WSD" setting it sometimes took 2 days until it didn't work again. I will keep testing and happy to report whether it was a permanent solution, I would be happy!

Hello ShlomiL,
Thank you too for the tool! As long as the manual setting to "TCP / IP" works, I'll leave it that way for now. If there are any problems again, I'll test your tool.
Thank you for your super quick help !!!

Hello HP community,

unfortunately the switch from "WSD" to "TCP / IP" only helped partially. Printing now seems to work with it (until today). Today, however, I wanted to start "HP Scan" on a computer and the message "The scanner cannot be reached, either switch it on and off or check the network connection" came up. Of course, I didn't change the printer or the settings! I then printed a document from the same computer, which worked flawlessly, even if an information window "Search network printer" appeared shortly before printing.

Even after printing, I could not start "HP Scan".
I then switched the printer off and on again. After that, "HP Scan" worked again. But that can't be a permanent solution?
What could that be? It's very annoying. I had never had such a problem with my cheap inkjet printers.

Hello HP community,

here is an intermediate status: Thanks to the tips from Valsimot and Repairatrooper, printing now works perfectly. Windows always recognizes the printer! Many thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, scanning with "HP Scan" still does not work. If I restart the printer (switch it off and on), it works for about a day. The next day I get an error message again when I open HP Scan.

But what always works is the HP app "HP Smart". I can always scan over it. I can not understand why the program does not work. At least I can scan when I need it.

Would be nice if HP would also manage it 😉

Hello Shlomi,

Thank you very much, but did not help.
The "HP Scan" had not recognized the scanner yesterday. Then I entered your command sequence.
The command sequence was also accepted flawlessly. After restarting the PC, the scanner was still not recognized.

I then restarted the printer (off and on). The "HP Scan" then recognized the scanner again, as before.
I tried again today. "HP Sacn" reports again that the scanner is not found 😞

Do I have to undo your change, if so how?
Do you have another idea?

Hi TeCoTech,

You should not undo any change, this can only resolve problems and restore the service condition as should be set wth Windows 10 for the best performance.

Is the PC connected wirelessly or via Ethernet?

Assuming it is connected via Ethernet, please ensure that both the printer and the PC are connected to the same router, and not to different access points by any chance.

If the PC is connected wirelessly, is your PC connected to a 2.4 or 5GHz band?
