I already solved the paper jamming problem, and recovered from error 49, which I'm sure can be done to also recover from the resend update error. The link is few posts back. Looks like people don't read all the posts here.

Perez can you share the instructions for fixing the paper jam?

Thanks for this, but my problem continues to be with paper jamming that started after I was able to correct the "Resend upgrade" problem.  I have to believe it doesn't require any hardware changes but 'simply' a correction to the printer's firmware, no?  Does anyone know if HP has made and posted that corrected firmware?  Thanks!!

Thanks @Pereg!  Some of us did not have the 49 error but have a persistent paper jamming after having corrected the "Resend upgrade" problem.  The correction you note that was posted earlier seems to include making hardware changes, rather than 'simply' corrected firmware.  I'm not sure why hardware changes should be needed when the paper jamming appears to be the result of a flawed firmware download.  Thanks!!

If you read my thread, that is exactly the same problem I had after the firmware upgrade - paper jamming. And again, if you were to read my thread, I'm briefly explaining why I think this firmware caused it. Basically the motor seems to be in a dead spot, and just needs to be moved a little. Perhaps it is something a firmware upgrade could fix, but apparently HP has not considered that problem in their latest "fix". They may never will.

So either try to do what I did, or live with an expensive paper weight, with hope HP will fix it. But considering all odds (older printer, only some people getting paper jams, only few actually complain, considerable resources required for investigating/replicating/fixing this) it will never happen.

Pereg, you stated that you never had a "resend update error" (see page 11 of this thread).  Only a paper jam. Your issue and the resolution should be moved to a different thread.

HP Recommended

Correct, I never had a "resend update" error. But I did the get the more critical "error 49" which requires complete firmware hard-reset and uploading known well-working firmware.

The "bad" firmware HP released affected M281 printers in several ways. Some people get "resend update" error, some get "error 49" and some get paper jam in output bin (the fuser).

Error 49 is actually most critical, as there's absolutely no recovery from it other than the hard-reset. If you have a "resend update" error, following the same method of performing hard-reset and loading good firmware will definitely fix your "resend update" error, as well. The key here is not only downgrading firmware, as some people here reported failed, but actually doing a hard-reset by jumping the pins on the board, first, as explained in the other threads I linked.

So both the above errors can be fixed with the same method explained above. What remains is a paper jam problem, which I have fixed as well.

In essence, whether you have an error (either of the 2 above), or paper jam in the fuser, or both, my "resolution" (some of it re-linked from work made by other members) definitely provides a resolution to all the concerns brought up in this thread. But I did not mark my post as the resolution, exactly because of what you mentioned. I did not have the "resend update" error per sei.

And, BTW, my issue and the resolution ARE in a different thread. Page 11 post simply shows a link to that thread.

We the consumers should not have to go about making mechanical fixes for an error HP introduced via forced software update. If a mechanical fix is required, they should assume responsibility to fix it themselves.
as it now stands this issue has gone unaddressed by HP for several months now. Not a peep here. Absolutely unconscionable customer service for a billion dollar company. I’ve since abandoned HP for a superior Epson. They at least respond to cries for help. #classaction if anyone gets a suit started or knows of one already started please add the link to this thread. I could use my $1000 back.

I agree.

I've seen some mentions about a class action suit, but even though I asked, I haven't seen anyone post any links. I can definitely use the compensation back. Just because I fixed the printer, it doesn't mean HP isn't liable for compensation for breaking it in the first place. My time and skills are not free for them to waste. The same goes for everyone who's worked very hard and wasted a lot of time on their printers, whether they made any headway or not. HP should be sued.

Coincidentally, I searched online class action lawsuits and cannot find anything active for this problem. I found few from a year and 2 years ago where HP firmware prevented printers using non-HP cartridges, but nothing on the current problem. So I just called Sanford Heisler attorney group in NYC and reported this and they're supposed to call me back for more details. When I know more, if there is an active suit anywhere, or if I start one, I'll report back here.
